Missable Items & Events

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin is notorious for its missable content. Many valuable items, crucial spells, and even entire questlines can be permanently lost if you're not careful. This section details key missables to ensure you don't overlook anything important during your journey through Drangleic.

Key Missable Items

Sublime Bone Dust

Sublime Bone Dust is a vital consumable that permanently increases the healing potency of your Estus Flasks. There are a total of 12 Sublime Bone Dusts in the game. Missing even one means your Estus Flasks will be less effective for the remainder of that playthrough. Always be on the lookout for these precious items.

  • Location 1: Forest of Fallen Giants
    • After defeating The Last Giant, proceed to the area with the ballistae. One Sublime Bone Dust is located in a chest behind a destructible wall. Use a bomb or a strong attack to break the wall.
  • Location 2: Heide's Tower of Flame
    • From the Heide's Ruin bonfire, head towards the Old Dragonslayer boss fog. Before the fog, look for a path leading down to a lower platform with a chest containing the dust.
  • Location 3: No-Man's Wharf
    • In the area with the large ship, after pulling the lever to bring the ship to shore, explore the lower decks. The dust is in a chest near the stern.
  • Location 4: Lost Bastille
    • After defeating the Ruin Sentinels, proceed to the next area. One dust is found in a chest on a ledge accessible by dropping down from a higher platform.
  • Location 5: Sinner's Rise
    • After defeating the Flexile Sentry (if you didn't fight it in No-Man's Wharf), or simply progressing through the area, you'll find a Sublime Bone Dust in a chest submerged in water near the boss fog gate.
  • Location 6: Iron Keep
    • In the area with the numerous Alonne Knights and the flaming bull statues, one dust is in a chest on a platform accessible by carefully navigating the narrow walkways.
  • Location 7: Shaded Woods
    • From the Ruined Fork Road bonfire, take the path towards the Shaded Ruins. The dust is in a chest guarded by several invisible enemies. Consider using a Pharos' Lockstone to reveal a hidden path or simply proceed with caution.
  • Location 8: Brightstone Cove Tseldora
    • In the lower section of the area, near the Duke's Dear Freja boss arena, one dust is in a chest behind a destructible wall.
  • Location 9: Drangleic Castle
    • After activating the elevator to the King's Passage, explore the upper levels of the castle. One dust is in a chest in a room guarded by a Stone Soldier.
  • Location 10: Shrine of Amana
    • In the watery areas, one dust is in a chest hidden behind a pillar or rock formation. Be wary of the Amana Priestesses.
  • Location 11: Dragon Aerie
    • After crossing the first bridge, look for a path leading down to a lower platform. The dust is in a chest guarded by a Dragon.
  • Location 12: Memory of Jeigh
    • This is the final Sublime Bone Dust. It's located in a chest within the giant's memory, accessible after obtaining the Giant's Kinship.

Unique Boss Souls & Transposed Weapons

Many boss souls can be traded with Straid of Olaphis or Ornifex the Crow for unique weapons, spells, or rings. If you consume a boss soul, you permanently lose the opportunity to acquire its associated item. Always check with these NPCs before consuming any boss soul, especially if you're aiming for specific builds or achievements.

  • Strategy: Before consuming any boss soul, warp to Brightstone Cove Tseldora, Lower Brightstone Cove (for Ornifex) and Lost Bastille, Sinner's Rise (for Straid) to see their offerings.

Rare Spells for Achievements

Several spells are acquired through specific means that can be missed, particularly those tied to covenants or NPC questlines. If you're aiming for the "Master of Sorcery," "Master of Miracles," "Master of Pyromancy," or "Master of Hexes" achievements, pay close attention.

  • Hidden Weapon (Sorcery): Acquired by reaching Rank 2 in the Bell Keepers Covenant. This requires defeating 30 invading players or NPC Bell Keepers. If you progress too far or clear the areas, finding invaders can become difficult.
  • Bountiful Sunlight (Miracle): Acquired by reaching Rank 3 in the Blue Sentinels Covenant. This requires earning 150 victories in duels or by successfully defending Way of Blue members. This is a significant time investment and can be missed if you don't focus on it early.
  • Warmth (Pyromancy): Acquired by reaching Rank 2 in the Brotherhood of Blood Covenant. This requires earning 50 victories in duels. Similar to Blue Sentinels, this is a commitment.
  • Great Resonant Soul (Hex): This powerful hex is sold by Felkin the Outcast if you have 20 Intelligence and 20 Faith. If you kill Felkin or don't meet the stat requirements before he potentially despawns (though less common in SotFS), you could miss it.

Missable Events & Questlines

Lucatiel of Mirrah's Questline

Lucatiel's questline is one of the most poignant in Dark Souls II, and completing it rewards you with her equipment and a valuable ring. Her appearances are tied to specific areas, and if you defeat the area boss before exhausting her dialogue, she may move on or disappear permanently.

  • Step 1: No-Man's Wharf
    • Find her near the entrance to the area, before the main village. Exhaust her dialogue.
  • Step 2: Lost Bastille
    • After defeating the Ruin Sentinels, she's in a room near the entrance to Sinner's Rise. Exhaust her dialogue.
  • Step 3: Earthen Peak
    • She's near the Upper Earthen Peak bonfire, overlooking the poison pools. Exhaust her dialogue.
  • Step 4: Black Gulch
    • She's in a hidden cave accessible by dropping down from the main path, near the first two giant worms. Exhaust her dialogue.
  • Step 5: Aldia's Keep
    • She's in the main hall, near the large cage. Exhaust her dialogue.
  • Important: Summoning for Boss Fights
    • To complete her quest and receive her equipment, you must summon her for at least three boss fights and ensure she survives each encounter. The easiest bosses to do this with are:
      • Flexile Sentry (No-Man's Wharf)
      • Smelter Demon (Iron Keep)
      • The Rotten (Black Gulch)
    • If she dies during a boss fight, you can use a Bonfire Ascetic to respawn the boss and try again, but this increases the difficulty.

Benhart of Jugo's Questline

Similar to Lucatiel, Benhart's quest rewards you with his equipment and a powerful greatsword. His appearances are also tied to area progression.

  • Step 1: Forest of Fallen Giants
    • Find him near the entrance to the area with the ballistae, blocking a path. Exhaust his dialogue. You'll need to defeat the The Last Giant to open the path he's blocking.
  • Step 2: Shaded Woods
    • From the Ruined Fork Road bonfire, take the path towards the Shaded Ruins. He's near the entrance to the Shaded Ruins. Exhaust his dialogue.
  • Step 3: Drangleic Castle
    • He's in the central hall, near the large door that requires souls to open. Exhaust his dialogue.
  • Step 4: Memory of Orro
    • He's inside the giant's memory, accessible after obtaining the Giant's Kinship. Exhaust his dialogue.
  • Important: Summoning for Boss Fights
    • To complete his quest, you must summon him for at least three boss fights and ensure he survives each encounter. Recommended bosses:
      • Prowling Magus and Congregation (Brightstone Cove Tseldora)
      • Looking Glass Knight (Drangleic Castle)
      • Giant Lord (Memory of Jeigh)

Gavlan's Moving Locations

Gavlan, the friendly merchant who buys your unwanted items, moves between three locations. If you don't interact with him in his earlier spots, you might miss out on his services or specific items he sells.

  • Location 1: No-Man's Wharf
    • He's in a small cave accessible by dropping down from a wooden platform, near the ship.
  • Location 2: Harvest Valley
    • He's in a cave near the Poison Pool bonfire.
  • Location 3: Doors of Pharros
    • He settles permanently in a room near the Gyrm's Respite bonfire.
  • Note: While he eventually settles in Doors of Pharros, visiting him in his earlier locations is crucial for early game item selling and to ensure he moves to his final spot.

Vendrick's Blessing

To gain Vendrick's blessing, which significantly boosts your defenses against the final boss, you must collect at least four Giant's Kinship items before facing him. These are obtained by defeating specific giant memories. If you defeat Vendrick without these, you'll miss out on the defense boost for that playthrough.

  • Giant's Kinship Locations:
    • Memory of Jeigh: Defeat the Giant Lord.
    • Memory of Orro: Located in the Forest of Fallen Giants, near the Cardinal Tower bonfire.
    • Memory of Vammar: Located in the Forest of Fallen Giants, near the Place Unbeknownst bonfire.
    • Memory of Rugo: Located in the Forest of Fallen Giants, near the King's Gate bonfire.
    • Fifth Kinship: Acquired after defeating Vendrick himself, but this is too late for his blessing.
