The Crestfallen's Retreat

Welcome, Undead, to the Forest of Fallen Giants, a crumbling testament to a forgotten war. Your journey begins in earnest here, navigating the treacherous paths and facing the hollowed remnants of a once-proud army. This section will guide you through the initial areas, securing vital items and establishing your first foothold.

Entering the Forest

From the Majula bonfire, follow the path leading into the Forest of Fallen Giants. You'll encounter your first enemies here: Hollow Soldiers. These foes are relatively weak but can overwhelm you in groups. Practice your basic combat maneuvers: blocking, rolling, and light attacks. Remember, stamina management is key!

  • First Encounter: Immediately upon entering, you'll face a few Hollow Soldiers. Engage them one at a time if possible.
  • Item Acquisition: Look for a corpse near the entrance, often containing a Soul of a Lost Undead and a Torch. Torches are invaluable for illuminating dark areas and deterring certain enemies.

The Riverbed and Bridge

Continue along the winding path. You'll soon reach a riverbed with a crumbling stone bridge overhead. More Hollow Soldiers patrol this area, some armed with bows. Prioritize ranged threats if you can.

  • Ambush Point: Be wary of Hollow Soldiers hiding behind environmental cover. One often drops from the bridge above.
  • Hidden Path: Before crossing the main bridge, look for a small, muddy path to the left, leading under the bridge. This often hides a Soul of a Nameless Soldier or other minor loot.

The First Bonfire: Cardinal Tower

Your primary objective in this initial segment is to reach the Cardinal Tower bonfire. This will serve as your central hub for exploration in the Forest of Fallen Giants.

  1. Cross the Bridge: After clearing the riverbed, proceed across the main stone bridge.
  2. Ascend the Stairs: You'll find a set of stairs leading upwards. More Hollow Soldiers await.
  3. Through the Archway: At the top of the stairs, pass through a large stone archway.
  4. Locate the Bonfire: The Cardinal Tower Bonfire is directly ahead, nestled within a small, relatively safe room. Light it immediately to establish a respawn point and replenish your Flasks.

Initial Exploration from Cardinal Tower

With the bonfire secured, take a moment to survey your surroundings. The Cardinal Tower offers several immediate paths for exploration and item collection.

  • Merchant Maughlin the Armorer: From the bonfire, head down the adjacent ladder. You'll find Maughlin the Armorer in a small room. He sells basic armor and weapons, and his inventory expands as you spend souls with him. Consider purchasing the Leather Shield if you don't have a good one.
  • Lenigrast's Workshop: In the same area as Maughlin, you'll find a locked door. This is Lenigrast's Workshop. You'll need the Lenigrast's Key to open it, which is found later in Majula. Once opened, Lenigrast can repair your equipment.
  • Path to the Rooftops: From the bonfire, take the path leading outside. This will bring you to the rooftops and battlements of the fort, where more challenging Hollow Soldiers and archers await. This path leads towards the area of the Last Giant boss.
  • Hidden Items: Always be on the lookout for breakable objects (barrels, crates) and corpses in corners or ledges. These often contain valuable Titanite Shards, Lifegems, or Soul of a Lost Undead.

Remember to return to Majula regularly to level up at the Emerald Herald and manage your inventory. The Forest of Fallen Giants is just the beginning of your arduous journey, so prepare thoroughly!
