Cathedral of Blue
The Cathedral of Blue is a small, isolated area accessible after defeating the Dragonrider in Heide's Tower of Flame. It serves as the headquarters for the Blue Sentinels covenant and is home to a challenging boss encounter.
Accessing the Cathedral
- From the Dragonrider bonfire in Heide's Tower of Flame, proceed across the circular platform where the boss fight took place.
- Continue straight, and you will find a drawbridge that is initially lowered.
- Speak to Licia of Lindeldt (if you haven't already) and exhaust her dialogue.
- Pay Licia 2000 souls to rotate the contraption, raising the drawbridge and revealing a path to the Cathedral of Blue.
Walkthrough
Upon entering the Cathedral of Blue, you'll find yourself in a grand, yet dilapidated, structure. The path is linear, leading directly to the boss fog gate.
- First Area: As you cross the raised drawbridge, you'll enter the main antechamber. There are no immediate enemies here, but be wary of the environment.
- Stairs and Balcony: Ascend the stairs. On the upper level, you'll find a balcony overlooking the entrance. There are no items or enemies here, but it offers a good vantage point.
- Boss Fog Gate: Continue through the archway on the upper level to reach the fog gate leading to the area's boss.
Key Items and NPCs
- Tark's Black Iron Set: After defeating the area boss, you can find the full Tark's Black Iron Set (Helm, Armor, Gauntlets, Leggings) and the Tower Shield on a corpse near the boss arena.
- Blue Sentinel Covenant: After defeating the boss, speak to Blue Sentinel Tark (who appears after the boss is defeated) to join the Blue Sentinels covenant. He also sells various items.
- Bonfire: The only bonfire in this area is located after the boss fight, making the run to the boss a one-way trip until it's defeated.
Boss: Old Dragonslayer
The Old Dragonslayer is a formidable opponent, reminiscent of Ornstein from the original Dark Souls. He wields a spear that deals lightning damage and has several thrusting and sweeping attacks.
Strategies:
- Melee Builds:
- Stay close to his legs and try to circle around him. Most of his attacks are frontal.
- Be mindful of his lightning AoE attack, which he telegraphs by raising his spear. Roll away quickly.
- After his thrusting attacks, he often has a brief recovery period, offering an opening for a few hits.
- Consider equipping a shield with high lightning resistance if you struggle with his ranged attacks.
- Ranged/Magic Builds:
- Maintain distance and cast spells or fire arrows.
- Be prepared to roll through his charging attacks and spear thrusts.
- His lightning projectiles can be dodged by rolling to the side.
- Patience is key; don't get greedy with your attacks.
- General Tips:
- He is weak to Strike damage, so weapons like clubs or hammers can be effective.
- He is resistant to Lightning damage, so avoid using lightning-infused weapons or spells.
- Summoning Masterless Glencour can help distract the boss, but his summon sign is located before the Dragonrider boss fight in Heide's Tower of Flame, requiring you to backtrack if you haven't summoned him already.
- The arena is circular and relatively small, so use the space to your advantage for dodging.
