Lonesome Gavlan
Gavlan, Gavlan! Our favorite nomadic merchant is a crucial contact for any adventurer looking to offload unwanted gear for precious souls. Unlike other merchants, Gavlan specializes in buying almost anything, making him invaluable for clearing out your inventory and funding your journey. Tracking him down, however, requires a bit of legwork.
Gavlan's Initial Encounters
Gavlan appears in three distinct locations throughout Drangleic. Each encounter offers a chance to trade, but his inventory and services expand as you progress.
- No-Man's Wharf:
- Location: After defeating the Flexile Sentry, proceed through the area. Gavlan is found in a small, dilapidated building near the shortcut that leads back to the ship. You'll need to drop down from a ledge to reach him.
- Access: From the No-Man's Wharf bonfire, head up the stairs and across the wooden bridge. Continue past the first group of Varangian Sailors. You'll eventually reach a section with a large, open building on your left. Instead of entering, look for a path that leads around the building's exterior, dropping down to a lower level. Gavlan's shack is directly ahead.
- Services: At this first meeting, Gavlan will only buy items from you. He will not sell anything yet. exhaust his dialogue to ensure he moves to his next location.
- Key Items: While not directly related to Gavlan, this area is rich with items. grab the Greatsword from the chest near the shortcut, and the Estus Flask Shard from a corpse hanging over the water.
- Harvest Valley:
- Location: Gavlan sets up shop in a cave within Harvest Valley, specifically in the area just before the Mineshaft bonfire.
- Access: From the Poison Pool bonfire, proceed through the toxic pools and past the Giant Stone Knights. You'll enter a cave system. Gavlan's cave is on the left side, shortly after you encounter the first Manikin.
- Services: Here, Gavlan expands his services. He will still buy your items, but he now also sells a limited selection of goods, including Poison Arrows and Poison Moss. This is particularly useful for navigating the poisonous environments ahead.
- Strategy: The path to Gavlan in Harvest Valley is fraught with poison. Consider equipping the Poisonbite Ring (found in the Gutter) or having plenty of Poison Moss on hand. Be wary of the Manikin enemies, which can inflict bleed.
- Doors of Pharros:
- Location: Gavlan's final and permanent residence is within the Doors of Pharros, specifically in the large circular room accessible after defeating the Royal Rat Authority.
- Access: After defeating the Royal Rat Authority boss, proceed through the door and down the winding path. You'll enter a large, waterlogged chamber filled with Gyrm warriors. Gavlan is located in a small alcove to the left of the main entrance to this chamber, behind a destructible wooden barrier.
- Services: This is Gavlan's permanent shop. He will buy all your unwanted items and significantly expands his selling inventory. He offers a wide array of useful items, including unlimited Poison Arrows, Poison Moss, Lifegems, and various other consumables. This is also where you can acquire the Gavlan's Bell, allowing you to summon him for trading in certain areas (though this is a rare occurrence and not always reliable).
- Important Note: Once Gavlan moves to the Doors of Pharros, he will no longer be available in No-Man's Wharf or Harvest Valley. Ensure you've completed any necessary trading in those locations before progressing too far.
Trading Tips with Gavlan
- Soul Farming: Gavlan is your primary source for converting excess equipment into souls. Don't be afraid to sell off duplicate armor pieces, weapons you don't intend to use, or items dropped by enemies that don't fit your build.
- Poison Stockpile: His unlimited supply of Poison Arrows and Poison Moss in the Doors of Pharros makes him a vital vendor for any player, especially those struggling with poison-heavy areas or boss encounters.
- Exhaust Dialogue: Always exhaust Gavlan's dialogue at each location to ensure he progresses to his next spot. Failing to do so might prevent him from appearing in subsequent areas.
- Gavlan's Bell: While a neat concept, the Gavlan's Bell item is often more of a novelty. It has very specific and limited summoning points, making it less reliable than simply visiting him at his permanent location.
