Slave Knight Gael Phase 1 Strategy
Slave Knight Gael, the final boss of The Ringed City DLC, is an endurance test that requires careful management of stamina and a keen understanding of his aggressive, yet predictable, attack patterns. In his first phase, Gael is a relentless melee combatant. His primary attacks involve a series of swift sword swings, often chained together in combos. These combos can vary in length and timing, so it's crucial to learn their rhythms. Dodge through his swings, aiming to end up behind him or to his side, creating small windows to land one or two hits before he initiates his next attack.
Gael also utilizes a powerful leaping attack where he jumps into the air and slams his greatsword down. This attack has a significant wind-up, giving you ample time to dodge to the side. Be wary of the follow-up, as he may immediately transition into a sword combo. Another notable attack is his lunging stab, which covers a good distance. Dodge to the side of this lunge. Gael's attacks are generally well-telegraphed, but their speed can be deceptive. Always prioritize dodging over blocking, as his relentless assault can quickly deplete your stamina and leave you vulnerable.
A key strategy for this phase is to stay relatively close to Gael, but not directly in front of him. This allows you to react to his melee attacks more effectively and get in quick hits during his recovery animations. When he finishes a combo, you typically have a brief window to land a hit or two before he begins his next sequence. If you're using a weapon with good reach, you can sometimes land hits even as he's recovering. Remember to manage your stamina; never deplete it entirely, as you'll need it to dodge his incoming attacks. If you find yourself struggling with his combos, consider using a shield with high stability for a few blocks, but don't rely on it as your primary defense. The goal in this phase is to chip away at his health while conserving your resources for the subsequent, more challenging phases.
