Iudex Gundyr serves as the very first boss encounter in Dark Souls III, found at the beginning of the game in the Cemetery of Ash. This formidable opponent acts as a gatekeeper, testing the player's fundamental combat skills and introducing them to the game's challenging boss mechanics. Understanding his weaknesses and attack patterns is crucial for a successful first encounter.
Phase 1 Strategy
In his initial phase, Iudex Gundyr wields a halberd and exhibits relatively slow but powerful attacks. His swings are telegraphed, allowing players ample opportunity to dodge. The most effective strategy here is to stay close to Gundyr, particularly behind him. Most of his halberd swings will miss if you are positioned at his back. This allows for consistent damage output. Iudex Gundyr is also parryable during this phase. Mastering the timing of a parry can trivialize this part of the fight, opening him up for a critical riposte. focus on learning his attack timings and punishing openings with well-timed dodges and strikes.
Phase 2 Strategy (Pus of Man)
Upon reaching approximately 50% health, Iudex Gundyr undergoes a horrifying transformation, becoming the Pus of Man. This grotesque, amorphous creature is significantly more aggressive and dangerous. It loses its halberd and instead attacks with a series of rapid, flailing limbs and a devastating grab attack. The strategy shifts dramatically in this phase. It is generally advisable to keep your distance from the Pus of Man. Its attacks have a wide reach and can be difficult to dodge up close. Ranged attacks are highly effective here. If using magic or bows, this phase becomes much more manageable. If forced into melee, focus on dodging its lunges and strikes, looking for small openings to land a few hits before retreating. Firebombs and other fire-based attacks are particularly effective against the Pus of Man, exploiting its weakness to flame. Careful positioning and a reliance on ranged damage or hit-and-run tactics are key to overcoming this transformed foe.
