Deacons of the Deep
Boss Strategy: This boss fight is a mob encounter, a unique challenge in Dark Souls III. Your primary goal is to kill the Deacon glowing red. Once he dies, the 'true' Deacon, the Archdeacon, will appear. Focus all your attacks on him while managing the surrounding mob of lesser deacons. Be wary of their curse buildup and the Archdeacon's dark orb attack. The Archdeacon will periodically cast a powerful dark orb spell that deals significant damage and can quickly deplete your health. Area-of-effect spells and weapons are highly effective in this encounter, as they can damage multiple deacons simultaneously.
The lesser deacons will continuously spawn and swarm you, attempting to overwhelm you with their basic attacks and contributing to curse buildup. It is essential to keep moving and avoid being surrounded. When the Archdeacon appears, he will be the primary target. He is often surrounded by other deacons, so clearing a path to him is important. Look for opportunities to strike him when he is casting his dark orb spell, as he is often stationary during this animation. However, be prepared to dodge his spell if you are too close. The arena is the Cathedral of the Deep, a large, circular room that can feel claustrophobic with the sheer number of enemies.
A common mistake is to focus on killing all the lesser deacons, which is a futile effort as they respawn. The key is to identify and eliminate the glowing red deacon quickly, then focus all your damage on the Archdeacon. Another pitfall is neglecting the curse buildup. If your curse meter fills, you will take continuous damage and eventually die. Having Mossfruit or Purging Stones is highly recommended. Players who utilize weapons with wide swings or spells like Great Soul Arrow can manage the mob effectively while still dealing damage to the Archdeacon. Patience and crowd control are paramount to overcoming this unique boss encounter.
