Magic

Magic in Dark Souls 3 encompasses Sorceries, Pyromancies, and Miracles, each offering a unique set of offensive, defensive, and utility spells. Mastering these arcane arts requires investing in the appropriate stats (Intelligence for Sorceries, Faith for Miracles, and both for Pyromancies) and finding the right catalysts—Staffs, Talismans, and Pyromancy Flames. Utilizing magic effectively can dramatically alter your approach to combat.

Magic in Dark Souls 3 is divided into three distinct schools, each with its own flavor and utility:

  • Sorceries: Primarily scaled by Intelligence, Sorceries are potent offensive spells that manifest as projectiles, beams, and area-of-effect attacks. They are cast using a Staff. Examples include Soul Arrow, Great Heavy Soul Arrow, and Crystal Soul Spear.
  • Pyromancies: These spells draw power from both Intelligence and Faith, offering a versatile mix of offensive and defensive capabilities. They are cast using a Pyromancy Flame. Pyromancies often deal fire damage and can include spells like Fireball, Great Combustion, and Chaos Bed Vestiges.
  • Miracles: Scaled by Faith, Miracles focus on healing, buffs, and divine offensive spells. They are cast using a Talisman. Common Miracles include Heal Aid, Lightning Spear, and Sunlight Spear.

To cast spells, you will need:

  • Attunement Slots: These are gained by leveling up the Attunement stat, allowing you to equip multiple spells.
  • Catalysts: Staffs for Sorceries, Talismans for Miracles, and Pyromancy Flames for Pyromancies. The potency of your spells is often influenced by the catalyst's Magic Adjust (MAG Adjust) stat and its scaling with your relevant attributes.
  • Spell Items: The actual spells are found throughout the world as scrolls or tomes, which must then be given to specific NPCs (Cornyx for Pyromancies, Irina of Carim for Miracles, and Orbeck of Vinheim for Sorceries) to learn them.

The effectiveness of your magic is heavily dependent on your character's stats and the chosen catalyst. For instance, a Staff with high Intelligence scaling will significantly boost the damage of your Sorceries. Experimenting with different spells and catalysts is key to finding a magical playstyle that suits you.
