Gameplay Mechanics
Mastering the core gameplay mechanics of Dark Souls III is paramount to survival. This section breaks down essential systems, offering actionable advice to help you navigate the treacherous world of Lothric.
Combat Fundamentals
Combat in Dark Souls III is deliberate and punishing. Understanding your character's capabilities and enemy patterns is key.
- Stamina Management: Every action – attacking, rolling, blocking, sprinting – consumes stamina. Watch your green bar carefully. Depleting it leaves you vulnerable. Prioritize actions and allow for recovery, especially after a combo or a dodge.
- Lock-On: Use the lock-on feature (R3/Right Stick Click) to focus on individual enemies. This helps with targeting and camera control, but can be a hindrance against multiple foes or large bosses where free camera movement is beneficial.
- Rolling and Dodging: Your primary defensive maneuver. Rolling provides invincibility frames (i-frames) during a portion of the animation. Learn enemy attack timings to roll through attacks, not just away from them. Equip Load affects your roll:
- Fast Roll (under 30% Equip Load): Longest distance, most i-frames. Ideal for agile builds.
- Mid Roll (30-70% Equip Load): Standard roll, good balance of distance and i-frames. Most common.
- Fat Roll (over 70% Equip Load): Shortest distance, fewest i-frames, and slower recovery. Avoid this at all costs unless you are intentionally playing a tank build that relies solely on blocking.
- Blocking: Using a shield or certain weapons to mitigate incoming damage. Different shields have varying Stability and Damage Absorption. A high Stability shield reduces the stamina consumed when blocking. Be aware of guard breaks if your stamina is depleted while blocking.
- Parrying and Riposting: A high-risk, high-reward mechanic.
- Equip a small shield or specific weapons (e.g., Parrying Dagger) in your left hand.
- Press L2/Left Trigger just before an enemy's attack connects.
- If successful, the enemy will be staggered. Immediately follow up with R1/Right Bumper for a devastating critical attack (Riposte).
- Practice parrying on weaker enemies in areas like the High Wall of Lothric against the standard Hollow Soldiers.
- Backstabs: Maneuver behind an enemy and press R1/Right Bumper for a critical backstab. This is often easier to achieve on slower, larger enemies or after staggering them.
Estus Flasks & Healing
Your primary source of healing and FP (Focus Points) recovery. Managing these effectively is crucial.
- Estus Flasks: Restore HP. Start with 3.
- Ashen Estus Flasks: Restore FP. Start with 1.
- Estus Shards: Found throughout the world, these items can be given to Andre of Astora at Firelink Shrine to increase your total number of Estus Flask charges. Early shards can be found in the High Wall of Lothric and Undead Settlement.
- Undead Bone Shards: Burn these at the Firelink Shrine bonfire to increase the potency of your Estus Flasks. The first can be found in the Undead Settlement, dropped by a large flaming Rotted Greatwood.
- Allocation: Speak to Andre of Astora to allocate your Estus Flasks between HP and FP. Adjust this based on your build (e.g., a pure melee build might allocate all to HP, while a sorcerer needs more FP).
Bonfires & Resurrection
Bonfires serve as checkpoints, healing stations, and fast travel points.
- Resting: Resting at a bonfire fully restores your HP, FP, and Estus Flask charges. It also respawns all non-boss enemies in the area.
- Fast Travel: Once you've activated multiple bonfires, you can fast travel between them from any bonfire menu.
- Resurrection: Upon death, you will respawn at the last bonfire you rested at, or the nearest activated bonfire if you haven't rested recently. You will lose all unspent souls and return to your Hallow form.
- Kindled State: Using an Ember (found on enemies, purchased from merchants, or as loot) will grant you the "Kindled" state, increasing your maximum HP and allowing you to summon phantoms for co-op. Dying removes the Kindled state.
Souls & Leveling
Souls are the universal currency for leveling up and purchasing items.
- Acquiring Souls: Defeat enemies and bosses, or consume Soul items (e.g., Soul of a Deserted Corpse).
- Leveling Up: Speak to the Fire Keeper at Firelink Shrine to spend souls and increase your character's stats. Prioritize Vigor (HP), Endurance (Stamina), and your primary damage-scaling stat (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, or Luck).
- Losing Souls: If you die, you drop all your unspent souls at the location of your death. You have one chance to retrieve them. Die again before reaching your bloodstain, and those souls are lost forever.
Equipment & Inventory
Your gear significantly impacts your playstyle and effectiveness.
- Weapons: Each weapon has a unique moveset, scaling attributes, and Weapon Arts. Experiment to find what suits you. Upgrade weapons with Titanite at Andre of Astora.
- Armor: Provides physical and elemental defense. Heavier armor offers more protection but increases Equip Load, potentially leading to a Fat Roll. There is no poise in Dark Souls III by default; it's tied to specific weapon arts and hyper armor frames.
- Rings: Equip up to four rings to gain various benefits, such as increased HP (Life Ring), stamina recovery (Chloranthy Ring), or damage boosts (Ring of Favor). Explore every corner for hidden rings.
- Items: Consumables like Throwing Knives, Firebombs, and various resins can give you an edge in combat. Always keep a stock of these.
- Inventory Management: Access your inventory from the menu. You can equip items, check descriptions, and manage your quick-slot items.
Covenants
Covenants are factions that offer unique rewards and gameplay experiences, often centered around multiplayer interactions.
- Joining Covenants: Discover specific items or NPCs to join a covenant. For example, the Way of Blue is given by Emma, High Priestess of Lothric Castle, in the High Wall of Lothric.
- Covenant Rewards: Earn covenant items (e.g., Proof of a Concord Kept for the Blades of the Darkmoon) by participating in their specific activities (PvP, co-op, or specific enemy drops). Offer these items to the covenant leader to rank up and receive unique weapons, spells, or rings.
- Switching Covenants: You can switch covenants at any time from your inventory without penalty, retaining your progress in previous covenants.
