Parrying is one of Dark Souls III's most rewarding, yet challenging, combat mechanics. When executed correctly, a parry will stagger most enemies, leaving them vulnerable to a devastating critical attack (often called a "riposte"). While initially daunting, mastering parries can trivialize many encounters, including some bosses, and conserve precious Estus Flasks.

To parry, you'll need a weapon or shield equipped in your left hand that has the "Parry" skill. Common parrying tools include small shields (like the Target Shield or Buckler), daggers (like the Dagger or Parrying Dagger), and some curved swords. When an enemy attacks, you must press the L2/LT button with precise timing, just before their attack connects. The timing window is very small and varies significantly between different parrying tools and enemy attacks.

Here are some key tips for learning to parry:

  • Practice on predictable enemies: Early game Hollows and Lothric Knights are excellent training dummies. Their attack patterns are relatively slow and easy to read.
  • Observe enemy wind-ups: Don't react to the attack itself, but to the beginning of the enemy's attack animation. This is where the parry window often begins.
  • Equip a small shield: Small shields generally have the most generous parry frames, making them ideal for beginners. The Target Shield and Buckler are particularly good choices.
  • Don't get greedy: If you miss a parry, be prepared to block or dodge the incoming attack. A failed parry often leaves you vulnerable.
  • Listen for the sound cue: A successful parry has a distinct, satisfying sound effect. This can help you refine your timing.

While parrying isn't essential for completing the game, it's a powerful skill that, once mastered, will significantly enhance your combat prowess and make you feel like a true Unkindled legend.
