Character creation is more than just aesthetics; it lays the foundation for your build. Your chosen Class determines your starting stats and equipment, influencing your combat style from the outset. Similarly, your Burial Gift provides a valuable early-game item that can offer a much-needed advantage. Take your time with these decisions, as they will shape your initial journey through the unforgiving world.

The character creation screen is where your legend begins. You'll be presented with several choices that define your character's starting attributes and appearance. Here's a breakdown of each step:

1. Choose Your Gender: This is purely cosmetic and has no impact on gameplay or stats.
2. Choose Your Body Type: Again, a cosmetic choice that affects your character's physique.
3. Choose Your Class: This is arguably the most important decision. Your Class determines your starting stats, equipment, and spells. While you can respec your stats later in the game (after defeating a certain boss), your initial choice dictates your early game strengths and weaknesses. Consider your preferred playstyle:
   • Knight: Excellent starting Vigor and Strength, good for melee builds.
   • Warrior: High Strength and Dexterity, versatile for various weapons.
   • Mercenary: High Dexterity, ideal for dual-wielding and fast weapons.
   • Thief: High Luck and Dexterity, good for critical hits and item discovery.
   • Assassin: Balanced stats for melee and sorcery, starts with a spell.
   • Sorcerer: High Intelligence, starts with powerful sorceries.
   • Pyromancer: High Intelligence and Faith, starts with powerful pyromancies.
   • Cleric: High Faith, starts with healing miracles.
   • Deprived: Starts at Soul Level 1 with all stats at 10, no equipment. A challenging choice for experienced players seeking a blank slate.
   Tip: For beginners, the Knight or Warrior are excellent choices due to their robust starting equipment and health.
4. Choose Your Burial Gift: This is a one-time bonus item that can provide a significant advantage in the early game.
   • Life Ring: Increases maximum HP. Always a solid choice for survivability.
   • Divine Blessing: Fully restores HP and cures all status effects. Useful in a pinch.
   • Hidden Blessing: Fully restores FP (Focus Points). Good for spellcasters.
   • Young White Branch: Allows you to temporarily disguise yourself as a common object. Can be used for clever skips or avoiding early encounters.
   • Sovereless Soul: Grants 2,000 souls. Useful for early leveling or purchasing items.
   • Rusted Gold Coin: Increases item discovery for a short period. Good for farming.
   • Cracked Red Eye Orb: Allows for one invasion of another player's world. For those who enjoy PvP early.
   • Fire Gem: Allows for Fire infusion of a weapon. Can be powerful early on against certain enemies.
   • Large Soul of a Nameless Soldier: Grants 2,000 souls. Similar to Sovereless Soul.
   • None: For the truly masochistic.
   Tip: The Life Ring is highly recommended for new players, providing a crucial health boost. The Fire Gem can also be very strong if you plan to use a weapon that benefits from it.
5. Customize Appearance: This is where you can fine-tune your character's facial features, hair, skin color, and more. While purely cosmetic, it allows for a personal touch. Don't worry too much about perfection here; you can alter your appearance later in the game by speaking to Rosaria, Mother of Rebirth, in the Cathedral of the Deep.
