Finding essential items and understanding equipment mechanics are vital for survival in Dark Souls III. The game features a wide array of weapons, armor, and consumables, each with specific uses and upgrade paths. Pay attention to optional, tougher enemies, as they often guard powerful rewards that can give you an edge.

In the starting area, the Cemetery of Ash, players can acquire several important items:

  • Ashen Estus Flask: This flask is crucial for restoring FP (Focus Points), which are used for weapon skills and spells. It can be found early in the level.
  • Firebombs: A stack of 5 Firebombs can be collected, which are particularly useful for dealing with the second form of the first boss, Iudex Gundyr.
  • Coiled Sword: Obtained after defeating Iudex Gundyr, this item is essential for progressing through the game.
  • Titanite Scale: Dropped by the Ravenous Crystal Lizard, this upgrade material is used for specific weapon upgrades.
  • Titanite Shard: A common upgrade material found in the area.

Weapons are upgraded using regular Titanite and can be infused with 15 different types of gems, unlocked by finding "Coals." Weapons requiring Twinkling Titanite or Titanite Scales upgrade differently and cap at +5. A Titanite Slab is required for maximum upgrade levels.
