The Cemetery of Ash
Welcome, Ashen One, to the treacherous lands of Lothric. The Cemetery of Ash serves as your initial proving ground, a tutorial area designed to introduce you to the core mechanics and unforgiving nature of Dark Souls III. Do not be complacent; even the lowliest Hollow can prove a deadly foe if underestimated. This section will guide you through the initial steps, covering essential items and the crucial first boss encounter.
As you awaken, you'll learn the basics of movement and combat. Explore carefully, as even the simplest enemies can pose a threat. We'll detail the locations of vital early-game items, including your first Estus Flask for healing and the Ashen Estus Flask for FP recovery, alongside your starting weapon. The ultimate goal here is to overcome the formidable Iudex Gundyr, a true test of your nascent skills.
Exploration and Item Acquisition
Upon starting, follow the linear path. You'll encounter several Hollows, ideal for practicing basic attacks and dodges. Look for the glowing item near the first few enemies – this is your first Estus Flask. Further on, you'll find a Broken Straight Sword. Continue exploring, and keep an eye out for a hidden path to your left before a drop-off, leading to a Soul of a Deserted Corpse. Near the large archway leading to the boss, you'll find the Ashen Estus Flask.
Iudex Gundyr Strategy
Iudex Gundyr is your first major challenge and a critical test of your fundamental combat skills. His attacks are telegraphed but powerful. Victory hinges on understanding his patterns and managing your stamina effectively.
Phase 1: Halberd Wielder
- Gundyr wields a halberd with wide swings and thrusts. Dodge into his attacks to position yourself behind him for a few hits.
- His overhead slam is a key attack to watch for; roll to the side to avoid it.
- Parrying: Gundyr is susceptible to parries. Practicing parries on his standard halberd swings can open him up for a critical hit.
- Stamina Management: Never deplete your stamina. Always reserve enough to dodge his counter-attacks.
Phase 2: Transformed Abomination
- When Gundyr's health drops to approximately 50%, he will transform into a grotesque, dark creature.
- His attacks become more erratic and powerful, featuring sweeping claw strikes and a dangerous lunge.
- Exploit Weakness: The transformed Gundyr is highly vulnerable to fire. If you chose the Firebomb starting gift, use them now for significant damage.
- Positioning: Staying close to his legs can sometimes cause his sweeping attacks to miss, allowing for brief attack windows. Be prepared to roll away from his stomps.
Upon defeating Iudex Gundyr, you will receive the Coiled Sword. Light the bonfire that appears and proceed through the large doors to reach Firelink Shrine.
