Exploring the Shrine & Hidden Areas
The Firelink Shrine, while serving as your central hub, is far more than just a safe haven. It conceals valuable items and a unique NPC interaction that can significantly aid your journey. Don't be too eager to depart; take the time to thoroughly explore its nooks and crannies, especially the areas accessible from the main bonfire.
Accessing the Shrine's Rooftop and the Nestling
A crucial hidden area lies above the main Firelink Shrine. To reach it, you'll need to utilize the environment to your advantage.
- Locate the Tree: From the main bonfire area within Firelink Shrine, look for a large, gnarled tree growing near the entrance to the main hall.
- Jump to the Roof: Carefully position yourself on the branches of this tree. With a well-timed jump, you can land on the tiled roof of the shrine. This might take a few attempts, so don't get discouraged.
- Discover the Estus Ring: Once on the roof, explore the accessible areas. You will find the Estus Ring. This ring is invaluable, as it significantly increases the amount of HP restored by your Estus Flasks.
- Find the Nestling: Continue exploring the rooftop. You will eventually find a small, secluded area where a peculiar creature, the Nestling, resides. This creature offers a unique trading mechanic.
The Nestling's Trades
The Nestling is a creature that will trade specific items with you. It's important to know what it desires and what it offers in return. The Nestling is found on the roof of the Firelink Shrine, accessible via the tree jump described above.
To initiate trades: Approach the Nestling and interact with it. You will be presented with its trade options. The Nestling is particularly interested in items that have been dropped or lost by adventurers.
| Item Offered by Player | Item Received from Nestling | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coiled Sword Fragment | Homeward Bone | 1 | A useful item for returning to the last bonfire rested at. |
| X-Axe | Ring of Favor | 1 | Obtained from the graveyard area outside Firelink Shrine. This ring is a significant boost to HP, Stamina, and Equip Load. |

| X-Armor | Chloranthy Ring | 1 | Obtained from the Undead Settlement. This ring increases stamina recovery speed. |
Important Note on Nestling Trades: The Nestling's inventory is limited. Once you have traded for an item, it will no longer be available. Prioritize trades based on your current needs and build. The specific items the Nestling requests (X-Axe, X-Shield, X-Armor) are found in the graveyard area outside Firelink Shrine, near the skeletons. Be cautious when retrieving them, as this area is guarded by powerful enemies.
