Getting Started & Core Mechanics

Welcome to Dark Souls Remastered, a game renowned for its challenging yet rewarding gameplay. This section serves as your initial primer, covering the fundamental mechanics that underpin your entire experience. Understanding concepts like Souls, Bonfires, Stamina, and the nuances of combat is paramount to your survival in the unforgiving world of Lordran. Prepare to learn the language of this dark realm.

Embarking on your journey as the Chosen Undead requires a firm grasp of the game's core systems. Dark Souls Remastered doesn't hold your hand; it expects you to learn through observation and, inevitably, through failure. This guide will demystify the essential mechanics, providing the foundational knowledge needed to navigate the early challenges and build a solid understanding for the trials that lie ahead. Master these basics, and you'll be well on your way to overcoming the darkness.

Souls: The Lifeblood of Progression

Souls are the primary currency in Dark Souls Remastered. You acquire them by defeating enemies and can spend them at bonfires to level up your character, or with merchants to purchase items and equipment. Crucially, when you die, you drop all the souls you are currently carrying at your bloodstain. You have one chance to retrieve them; if you die again before reaching your bloodstain, those souls are lost forever. This mechanic encourages careful play and strategic risk assessment.

Bonfires: Your Sanctuary

Bonfires are scattered throughout Lordran and serve as your checkpoints. Resting at a bonfire:

  • Fully restores your HP and Estus Flasks.
  • Respawns most enemies in the surrounding area.
  • Allows you to level up your character by spending souls.
  • Enables you to attune spells and manage your equipment.
  • Reverses hollowing, turning you back into a human (if you have Humanity).

Bonfires are your lifeline, but be mindful that resting will reset the area, meaning you'll have to face respawned enemies again.

Stamina: The Engine of Combat

Stamina is your most critical resource in combat. Every action – attacking, blocking, dodging, and sprinting – consumes stamina. Never let your stamina bar deplete completely. Always ensure you have enough stamina to perform at least one dodge roll to escape danger. Running out of stamina leaves you vulnerable and unable to defend yourself.

Combat Fundamentals

  • Attacking: Light and heavy attacks vary by weapon.
  • Blocking: Using a shield negates or reduces incoming damage, but consumes stamina. Shield stability is key.
  • Dodging (Rolling): Your primary defensive maneuver. Timing is crucial; roll just before an attack hits to evade it. Your equip load affects roll speed and distance.
  • Parrying: A risky but rewarding maneuver that, if timed correctly, stuns an enemy for a critical riposte.
  • Backstabbing: Sneak up behind an enemy and perform a critical attack for massive damage.

Humanity and Hollowing

Being human allows you to summon other players or NPCs for help and to kindle bonfires for more Estus Flasks. When you die, you become hollow, losing your humanity and the ability to summon. You can reverse hollowing by using a Humanity item or by being resurrected by a Fire Keeper. Having Humanity also slightly boosts your defenses and item discovery rate.

Equip Load

The weight of your equipped gear affects your movement speed and dodge roll effectiveness. Staying below 25% equip load grants the fastest roll. Between 25% and 50% gives a medium roll. Above 50% results in a slow, cumbersome 'fat roll' that is highly ineffective.
