Relationship Management: Specific Events & Choices
Navigating the treacherous roads of Darkest Dungeon II requires not only strategic combat and resource management but also a keen understanding of your heroes' interpersonal dynamics. Relationships, both positive and negative, significantly impact combat effectiveness and overall expedition stability. This section delves into specific events and choices that directly influence these crucial bonds.
Road Events: Opportunities for Growth or Discord
Road Events are random encounters that occur between nodes on the expedition map. Many of these present choices that can alter hero relationships. Pay close attention to the dialogue and potential outcomes.
- The Wayward Child:
- Description: You encounter a lost child.
- Choices:
- "Offer comfort and guidance." (Positive relationship chance between two random heroes, slight stress reduction for the hero who interacts.)
- "Ignore the child, time is short." (Negative relationship chance between two random heroes, slight stress increase for the party.)
- "Attempt to return them to their family." (Higher chance for a significant positive relationship boost between two heroes, but a small chance of a combat encounter if the family is hostile or the child is a trap.)
- Strategy: Generally, choosing compassionate options is safer for relationship building. The "Attempt to return" option carries higher risk but also higher reward. Consider your current stress levels and party composition before taking the risk.
- The Desperate Plea:
- Description: A starving traveler begs for food.
- Choices:
- "Share your provisions." (Consumes 1-2 Food items. High chance for a positive relationship between two random heroes, minor stress reduction.)
- "Refuse, you have little to spare." (Negative relationship chance between two random heroes, minor stress increase.)
- Strategy: If you have ample Food (3+ items), sharing is almost always the optimal choice for relationship health. The stress reduction is a nice bonus.
- The Broken Cart:
- Description: Your stagecoach encounters a broken-down cart blocking the path.
- Choices:
- "Help clear the wreckage." (Consumes 1 Repair Kit if available, or 1 Bandage if not. Positive relationship chance between two random heroes, minor stress reduction.)
- "Force your way through." (Minor damage to the Stagecoach, negative relationship chance between two random heroes, minor stress increase.)
- Strategy: Always prioritize helping if you have the necessary items. Repair Kits are common and worth sacrificing for relationship gains.
Combat Encounters: Actions Speak Louder Than Words
Hero actions during combat can also influence relationships, particularly when under high stress or facing difficult odds.
- Heroic Feats:
- Description: A hero critically hits an enemy, lands a powerful combo, or saves another hero from a dire situation (e.g., using a Healing Salve on a hero near Death's Door).
- Outcome: High chance for a positive relationship gain between the performing hero and a nearby ally, especially if that ally was directly benefited.
- Strategy: Encourage synergistic combat. Using abilities like the Man-at-Arms' Bolster or the Plague Doctor's Battlefield Medicine on stressed or damaged allies can foster positive bonds.
- Selfish Actions / Failures:
- Description: A hero repeatedly misses attacks, fails to heal an ally, or uses a self-buff when an ally is in critical condition. This is especially true if a hero has a negative quirk like Selfish or Cowardly.
- Outcome: High chance for a negative relationship gain between the performing hero and a nearby ally, particularly if the ally was negatively impacted by the action/inaction.
- Strategy: Be mindful of hero quirks. A Selfish hero might prioritize their own well-being, leading to resentment from others. Try to mitigate these tendencies with trinkets or combat items if possible.
Inn Events: Respite and Reflection
The Inn provides a crucial opportunity to mend or strengthen relationships through specific items and choices.
- Inn Items:
- Whiskey Bottle: Using this item on a hero reduces their stress and has a chance to improve a relationship with an adjacent hero.
- Laudanum: While primarily for stress, using it on a highly stressed hero can sometimes prevent negative relationship events that might trigger from their high stress.
- Playing Cards / Dice Set: Using these items at the Inn can trigger a mini-event where heroes gamble or play games, potentially leading to positive relationship changes.
- Inn Conversations:
- Description: Occasionally, heroes will initiate conversations at the Inn, presenting dialogue choices.
- Choices: These are highly contextual, but generally, choosing empathetic, supportive, or understanding responses will lead to positive relationship changes. Dismissive or aggressive responses will almost always lead to negative outcomes.
- Strategy: Always read the dialogue carefully. Consider the personalities of the heroes involved. For example, a gruff response might be acceptable between the Man-at-Arms and the Hellion, but not between the Vestal and the Jester.
By actively managing these events and making informed choices, you can cultivate a cohesive and effective party, turning potential discord into powerful camaraderie that will be essential for overcoming the darkest challenges ahead.
