Boss Strategy: The Brigand Pounder (Ruins)
The Brigand Pounder is a formidable early-game boss found exclusively in the Ruins. This encounter tests your party's ability to manage multiple threats and prioritize targets. Success hinges on understanding the Pounder's mechanics and effectively dealing with its supporting cast.
Party Composition & Preparation
For this fight, a balanced party with strong damage output, stress healing, and some form of protection or healing is crucial. Consider the following:
- Front-line Damage: A Crusader or Leper can deal significant damage to the Pounder itself. A Hellion is also excellent for hitting multiple targets with If It Bleeds or Breakthrough.
- Back-line Damage/Support: A Highwayman with Point Blank Shot and Duelist's Advance can be very effective, especially if he can hit the back ranks. A Grave Robber with Lunge and Shadow Fade offers mobility and damage.
- Stress Healer: A Jester (Battle Ballad, Inspiring Cry) or a Houndmaster (Cry Havoc) is highly recommended to mitigate the stress inflicted by the Brigand Fusiliers.
- Healer: A Vestal (Divine Grace, Divine Comfort) or an Occultist (Wyrd Reconstruction) is essential for keeping your party alive through the sustained damage.
- Stunners: Heroes with reliable stuns (e.g., Crusader's Stunning Blow, Bounty Hunter's Flashbang) can help control the Brigand Fusiliers.
Provisions: Bring extra Bandages for bleed, Antivenom if you expect blight, and plenty of Torches to maintain high light levels, reducing enemy surprise chance and increasing your party's accuracy and dodge. Medicinal Herbs can clear debuffs.
The Encounter: Phases and Mechanics
The Brigand Pounder itself is a stationary, high-HP target that doesn't attack directly. Its danger comes from its ability to summon Brigand Fusiliers and occasionally a Brigand Matchman. The fight essentially breaks down into two key elements:
1. The Brigand Pounder
- Action: The Pounder's primary action is to use Reinforce, which summons a Brigand Fusilier into an empty slot. It will also occasionally use Matchman! to summon a Brigand Matchman.
- Vulnerability: The Pounder has low resistances to Bleed and Blight, making DoT (Damage over Time) effects highly effective.
- Strategy: While the Pounder is your ultimate target, you should NOT focus all your damage on it immediately. It's a damage race against the reinforcements.
2. The Brigand Fusiliers & Matchman
- Brigand Fusilier: These are the primary threat. They deal moderate damage and significant stress with their ranged attacks. They have relatively low HP and resistances.
- Brigand Matchman: This enemy is the most dangerous. If allowed to act, the Matchman will light the cannon, causing the Pounder to fire a devastating AoE attack that hits your entire party for massive damage and stress. The Matchman has very low HP.
- Strategy:
- Prioritize the Matchman: If a Brigand Matchman appears, it MUST be killed immediately. Use your highest damage attacks or stuns to prevent it from acting. Failing to do so will likely result in a party wipe or severe stress and health loss.
- Manage Fusiliers: After dealing with any Matchmen, focus on eliminating the Brigand Fusiliers. Their stress damage can quickly push your heroes to Resolve Checks. Use multi-target attacks or high-damage single-target skills to clear them out efficiently.
Walkthrough Steps
- Initial Setup: On the first turn, the Pounder will likely summon a Fusilier. Your priority is to get damage onto the Fusilier while setting up your buffs or initial DoTs on the Pounder.
- Damage Rotation:
- Apply Bleed/Blight to the Brigand Pounder with heroes like the Plague Doctor (Plague Grenade, Noxious Blast), Jester (Harvest), or Houndmaster (Hound's Rush).
- Maintain consistent damage on the Pounder, but always be ready to switch targets.
- Threat Assessment:
- Matchman Appears: If the Brigand Pounder uses Matchman!, immediately shift all available attacks to the Brigand Matchman. He has very low health and can be dispatched quickly. Do not let him take a turn.
- Fusiliers Accumulate: If there are 2-3 Brigand Fusiliers on the field, focus on eliminating at least one or two to reduce incoming damage and stress. Use AoE attacks if available.
- Stress Management: Utilize your stress healer (Jester's Inspiring Cry, Houndmaster's Cry Havoc) whenever stress levels start to climb, especially after Fusilier attacks.
- Healing: Keep your party's health topped off. The Fusiliers' attacks, while not individually devastating, can chip away at your health over time.
- Repeat: Continue this cycle: damage the Pounder, kill Matchmen instantly, manage Fusiliers, and heal/de-stress as needed. The DoT effects on the Pounder will steadily tick away its health, making the fight manageable as long as you control the reinforcements.
By prioritizing the Matchman and managing the Fusiliers effectively, the Brigand Pounder will eventually fall to your sustained damage, even if it feels like a relentless onslaught of reinforcements.
