Boss Strategy: The Fanatic (Crimson Court)

The Fanatic is a unique and highly dangerous mini-boss introduced with the Crimson Court DLC. Unlike other bosses, he doesn't reside in a fixed location but actively hunts your party if you bring too many heroes afflicted with the Crimson Curse into a dungeon. His appearance is signaled by a distinctive "The Fanatic is on the Hunt" message when selecting a quest. Engaging him unprepared is a recipe for disaster.

Triggering the Fanatic

The Fanatic appears when your party contains two or more heroes afflicted with the Crimson Curse. He can ambush you in any dungeon region (Ruins, Warrens, Weald, Cove) and at any difficulty level (Apprentice, Veteran, Champion). The more cursed heroes you bring, the higher the chance of him appearing. It's generally advisable to avoid bringing multiple cursed heroes into a dungeon unless you are specifically seeking out this encounter.

Party Composition and Preparation

Success against the Fanatic hinges on careful party selection and preparation. He hits hard, applies significant stress, and has unique mechanics that punish certain strategies.

  • Stress Healers: A dedicated stress healer like a Jester (with Battle Ballad and Inspiring Cry) or a Crusader (with Inspiring Cry) is almost mandatory. The Fanatic's "Pyre of the Damned" attack inflicts heavy stress.
  • Healers: Strong direct healers such as a Vestal (Divine Grace, Divine Comfort) or an Occultist (Wyrd Reconstruction) are crucial to counteract his high damage output.
  • Damage Dealers: Focus on high single-target damage. Heroes like a Highwayman (Point Blank Shot, Duelist's Advance), Bounty Hunter (Collect Bounty, Finish Him!), or Hellion (If It Bleeds, Iron Swan) excel here. Avoid relying heavily on bleed or blight, as he has high resistances.
  • Stunners: Stuns can buy precious turns. A Man-at-Arms (Rampart, Defender) or a Crusader (Stunning Blow) can be effective.
  • Trinkets: Prioritize trinkets that boost damage, accuracy, and stress resistance. Examples include the Ancestor's Pen, Ancestor's Pistol, Ancestor's Signet Ring, and any class-specific damage/accuracy trinkets. For stress healers, the Ancestor's Scroll is invaluable.
  • Provisions: Bring ample Bandages (for his bleed attacks), Antivenom (less critical, but good for general dungeon crawling), and plenty of Food. Laudanum can help manage stress if your stress healer falls behind.

The Battle: Phases and Strategy

The Fanatic fight is divided into two main phases, dictated by the presence of his unique "Pyre" mechanic.

Phase 1: The Pyre of the Damned

The battle begins with the Fanatic in the back ranks, and one of your cursed heroes immediately dragged onto the Pyre of the Damned. This Pyre is a unique environmental object that occupies one of your party slots. The hero on the Pyre takes continuous damage and stress every turn. They cannot act and are effectively stunned until freed.

  • Prioritize the Pyre: Your immediate goal is to destroy the Pyre. It has its own health bar and resistances. Focus all available damage on it.
    • Damage Types: The Pyre has moderate resistances to bleed and blight, so direct damage is most effective.
    • Hero on Pyre: The hero on the Pyre will take damage and stress. Ensure your healer is ready to top them up once they are freed.
  • Fanatic's Actions: While the Pyre is active, the Fanatic will primarily use attacks like "Burning Brand" (high damage, stress, and potential bleed) and "Zealous Accusation" (stress to the entire party). He will also move forward as ranks open up.
  • Stress Management: Keep a close eye on your party's stress levels. Use your stress healer's abilities proactively.

Phase 2: Fanatic Unleashed

Once the Pyre is destroyed, the hero is freed, and the Fanatic becomes much more aggressive. He will move into the front ranks and unleash his full repertoire of attacks.

  • Focus Fire: With the Pyre gone, all damage should be directed at the Fanatic. He has high HP and resistances, so sustained damage is key.
  • "Holy Lance" and "Burning Brand": Expect powerful melee attacks that deal significant damage and stress. He can also apply bleed.
  • "Zealous Accusation": This stress attack will continue to be a threat. Maintain stress healing.
  • Stuns and Debuffs: If you have reliable stunners, use them to interrupt his actions and reduce incoming damage/stress. Debuffs that reduce his damage or accuracy can also be helpful, though his resistances are high.
  • Healing: Your healer will be working overtime. Ensure they have enough healing skills equipped and are able to act frequently.

Post-Battle Considerations

If you manage to defeat the Fanatic, he drops valuable Crimson Court trinkets and a significant amount of gold. However, your party will likely be heavily stressed and potentially afflicted with new negative quirks or diseases. Head back to the Hamlet immediately to recover. Remember, the Fanatic will continue to hunt if you bring multiple cursed heroes into dungeons, so manage your Crimson Curse afflictions carefully.
