Boss Strategy: The Miller (Color of Madness)
The Miller is the primary boss of the Farmstead in the Color of Madness DLC, encountered during the Endless Harvest. Defeating him is crucial for progressing and earning Comet Shards. This fight is less about raw damage and more about strategic crowd control and managing his unique mechanics.
Party Composition & Preparation
A balanced party with good damage, healing, and especially stun/move capabilities is highly recommended. Consider the following:
- Frontline Damage/Tank: Hellion, Crusader, Leper. Heroes with strong single-target damage and survivability are key.
- Support/Healer: Vestal (for AoE heals and stuns), Plague Doctor (for blight, stuns, and stress heal), Occultist (for high single-target heals and mark synergy).
- Backline Damage/Utility: Arbalest/Musketeer (for mark synergy and stress heal), Houndmaster (for stress heal, guard, and bleed), Grave Robber (for high damage and blight/bleed).
- Stunners: Heroes with reliable stun skills are invaluable. The Miller often summons allies, and stunning them can prevent significant damage and stress.
- Movement Skills: Skills that can move enemies (e.g., Highwayman's Duelist's Advance, Grave Robber's Lunge) can be useful for repositioning the Miller's Husk or the Miller himself if he gets shuffled.
Recommended Trinkets:
- Damage Trinkets: Focus on increasing damage against Eldritch and Human foes if possible, or general damage buffs.
- Stun Chance Trinkets: Essential for controlling the summoned Husks.
- Accuracy Trinkets: The Miller has moderate Dodge, so ensuring your attacks land is important.
- Healing/Stress Healing Trinkets: For sustained fights, these are always beneficial.
Provisions:
- Food: Standard amount, as the Endless Harvest is a long haul.
- Torches: While the Farmstead has its own light mechanic, a few torches can be useful for specific situations or if you need to boost scouting.
- Bandages & Antivenom: The Miller and his allies can inflict bleed and blight.
- Medicinal Herbs: For clearing debuffs.
- Holy Water: Can remove debuffs or provide a temporary buff.
- Laudanum: For stress relief, as the fight can be stressful.
The Fight: Phases and Mechanics
The Miller fight has a distinct mechanic centered around his "Miller's Husk."
Phase 1: The Miller and his Husks
The Miller starts accompanied by a Miller's Husk. This Husk is immune to damage and acts as a shield for the Miller. As long as the Miller's Husk is present, the Miller himself takes significantly reduced damage.
- Objective: Your primary goal is to eliminate the Miller's Husk. It has moderate health but is not overly tanky.
- Strategy: Focus all damage on the Miller's Husk until it is defeated. Use your strongest single-target attacks.
- Beware: The Miller will use attacks like "Reap" (high damage, bleed) and "The Grind" (AoE stress and minor damage) while his Husk is active. The Husks themselves can also deal damage and stress.
Phase 2: The Miller's Revival Mechanic
Once the Miller's Husk is defeated, the Miller will immediately use his signature ability: "The Reaping." This ability will target one of your heroes, marking them. On his next turn, he will attempt to revive a new Miller's Husk using the marked hero. If successful, the marked hero will be transformed into a new Miller's Husk, and the cycle repeats.
- Crucial Counterplay: When a hero is marked by "The Reaping," you MUST stun the Miller before his next turn. A successful stun will interrupt "The Reaping," preventing the hero from being transformed and allowing you to continue damaging the Miller directly.
- Stun Priority: This is where reliable stunners shine. Ensure your stun skills are ready and prioritize stunning the Miller whenever "The Reaping" is active.
- Damage Window: After you stun him and prevent the transformation, the Miller will be vulnerable for a turn or two before he attempts "The Reaping" again (or summons a regular Husk). This is your window to deal as much damage as possible to the Miller himself.
General Combat Tips:
- Manage Stress: The Miller and his allies can inflict significant stress. Have a hero capable of stress healing (e.g., Jester's Battle Ballad/Inspiring Cry, Houndmaster's Cry Havoc) to keep your party sane.
- Heal Consistently: "Reap" can deal heavy damage and bleed. Keep your party's health up, especially the hero who might be targeted by "The Reaping."
- Prioritize Stuns: Beyond interrupting "The Reaping," stunning any additional Husks or other summoned enemies can reduce incoming damage and stress, giving you more breathing room.
- Bleed/Blight: The Miller is not immune to bleed or blight, so these damage-over-time effects can be effective, especially during your damage windows.
Victory Condition
The fight ends when the Miller's health is depleted. Successfully navigating the "The Reaping" mechanic by consistently stunning him is the key to victory. Stay vigilant, manage your resources, and the Miller will fall, allowing you to continue your Endless Harvest.
