Boss Strategy: The Sleeper (Color of Madness)

The Sleeper is the final boss of the Farmstead in the Color of Madness DLC. This multi-phase encounter requires careful party composition and resource management. Unlike other bosses, the Sleeper is not a single entity but rather a series of forms that must be defeated.

Party Composition Recommendations

The key to defeating the Sleeper lies in balancing damage, stress healing, and sustain. Consider the following roles:

  • Primary Damage Dealers: Heroes capable of high single-target damage are crucial for quickly dispatching the Sleeper's forms.
    • Highwayman: Point Blank Shot and Duelist's Advance offer excellent burst.
    • Bounty Hunter: Collect Bounty and Mark for Death provide strong damage and utility.
    • Hellion: If It Bleeds and Iron Swan hit hard, but watch for her self-debuffs.
  • Off-Healer/Support: A hero who can provide both healing and some damage or stress relief.
    • Flagellant: Suffer no more and Redeem are invaluable for healing and stress management, especially with his unique interactions at low health.
    • Crusader: Battle Heal and Inspiring Cry offer reliable healing and stress relief.
  • Stress Healer: Given the high stress output of this fight, a dedicated stress healer is almost mandatory.
    • Jester: Battle Ballad and Inspiring Tune are top-tier for stress and buffs.
    • Houndmaster: Cry Havoc and Lick Wounds provide good stress relief and self-sustain.
  • Tank/Off-Tank: A hero who can absorb hits and potentially guard others.
    • Man-at-Arms: Bolster, Defender, and Retribution make him an excellent protector and riposte damage dealer.
    • Crusader: Can also serve as a sturdy front-liner with good damage.

A common and effective party might be: Man-at-Arms, Flagellant, Jester, Highwayman (from front to back).

Trinkets and Provisions

Prioritize trinkets that boost damage, critical hit chance, and stress resistance. Speed is also valuable to act before the boss.

  • Damage Trinkets: Ancestor's Pen, Focus Ring, Heaven's Hairpin.
  • Stress Resistance: Ancestor's Map, Tenacity Ring, Cleansing Crystal.
  • Healing/Sustain: Ancestor's Scroll, Sacred Scroll (for Flagellant).

For provisions, bring a generous supply of:

  • Medicinal Herbs: Crucial for removing blight and bleed from your heroes.
  • Bandages: For bleed effects.
  • Antivenom: For blight effects.
  • Laudanum: To reduce high stress on individual heroes.
  • Food: Enough to heal between phases if needed, though the fight is continuous.

The Battle: Phases and Strategy

The Sleeper fight consists of four distinct phases, each presenting unique challenges. The boss will transform into its next phase upon reaching certain health thresholds.

Phase 1: The Sleeper (Crystal Form)

The Sleeper starts as a large crystal. It has high PROT and will summon Crystalline Aberrations. Your primary goal here is to deal enough damage to break its crystal shell.

  • Strategy: Focus all damage on The Sleeper. Ignore the Crystalline Aberrations unless they are causing significant stress or damage. High single-target damage abilities are best. The Sleeper will occasionally use abilities that cause stress and mark targets.
  • Key Abilities:
    • Crystal Shard: Moderate damage, stress.
    • Summon Aberration: Summons Crystalline Aberrations.
  • Transition: Once its health drops below a certain point, it will shatter and transition to Phase 2.

Phase 2: Sleeper's Herald

The Sleeper's Herald is a high-damage, high-stress entity. It often targets specific ranks and can apply powerful debuffs.

  • Strategy: This phase is a race against time. The Herald hits hard and can quickly stack stress. Prioritize dealing as much damage as possible to the Herald while managing stress with your Jester or Houndmaster. Use your off-healer to keep HP stable.
  • Key Abilities:
    • Cosmic Blast: High damage, stress, often targets back ranks.
    • Reality Warp: Stress, debuffs.
  • Transition: Defeat the Sleeper's Herald to move to Phase 3.

Phase 3: Sleeper's Dream

This phase introduces two entities: the Sleeper's Dream and the Sleeper's Gaze. The Gaze is a support unit that buffs the Dream and debuffs your party.

  • Strategy: Focus fire on the Sleeper's Gaze first. Removing the Gaze eliminates its buffs and debuffs, making the Dream much more manageable. Once the Gaze is down, switch all damage to the Sleeper's Dream. Be prepared for high stress and potential shuffles.
  • Key Abilities (Sleeper's Dream):
    • Whispers of Madness: High stress, shuffles party.
    • Eldritch Strike: Moderate damage, blight.
  • Key Abilities (Sleeper's Gaze):
    • Empower Dream: Buffs Sleeper's Dream.
    • Unsettling Glance: Debuffs party, stress.
  • Transition: Defeat both the Sleeper's Dream and the Sleeper's Gaze.

Phase 4: The True Sleeper

The final form is the True Sleeper, a formidable foe with high damage and stress capabilities. It will also continue to summon Crystalline Aberrations.

  • Strategy: This is the final push. Ignore the summoned Crystalline Aberrations unless they are critically low on health and can be quickly dispatched for a stun or minor stress relief. Focus all your remaining damage on the True Sleeper. Maintain stress levels as best you can and heal any critical HP. Use any remaining powerful combat items or abilities.
  • Key Abilities:
    • Cosmic Rupture: Very high damage, stress, can hit multiple targets.
    • Reality Shift: Stress, debuffs, can summon Aberrations.
  • Victory: Defeat the True Sleeper to claim victory and earn your reward!

General Tips for the Farmstead

  • Shard Dust: Collect as much Shard Dust as possible from regular encounters in the Farmstead. This can be exchanged for powerful trinkets at the Nomad Wagon.
  • Farmstead Trinkets: The special trinkets found in the Farmstead (e.g., Crystallizing Carapace, Shard of the Old One) are often excellent choices for this fight due to their unique bonuses against Eldritch enemies or stress resistance.
  • Stress Management: Stress is the silent killer in the Farmstead. Prioritize stress healing and resistance.
  • Camping Skills: While there are no traditional camps, some heroes have skills that provide buffs or stress relief that can be useful if you manage to activate them during the endless waves before the boss. However, for the Sleeper fight itself, focus on combat prowess.
