Afflictions & Virtues
The psychological toll of the Hamlet's horrors is as dangerous as any physical wound. As your heroes delve deeper into the dungeons, their Stress levels will inevitably rise. Reaching 100 Stress triggers a critical resolve check, which can result in either a debilitating Affliction or a powerful Virtue. Understanding and managing these states is paramount to your success.
Understanding Stress
Stress is a core mechanic, represented by a white bar under each hero's health. It increases from various sources:
- Environmental Factors: Walking in darkness, activating certain curios without the correct item, or simply enduring a long dungeon.
- Enemy Attacks: Many enemies possess stress-dealing abilities. Prioritize eliminating these threats.
- Critical Hits: Both your heroes and enemies can deal critical hits, which often inflict additional Stress.
- Hero Abilities: Some hero abilities, like the Jester's "Battle Ballad," can reduce stress for the party.
Managing Stress During Expeditions
Proactive stress management is crucial. Here are key strategies:
- Camping Skills: During long expeditions (Medium or Long), camping provides an opportunity to reduce stress. Heroes like the Crusader ("Zealous Speech") and Jester ("Mockery") have excellent stress-healing camp skills. Always prioritize these.
- Stress Healers: Include a dedicated stress healer in your party composition. The Jester is the undisputed master, with "Inspiring Tune" and "Battle Ballad." The Crusader's "Inspiring Cry" and the Houndmaster's "Cry Havoc" are also valuable.
- Curio Interactions: Certain curios, when interacted with using specific items, can reduce stress. For example, using a Holy Water on an Altar often provides stress relief and buffs. Experiment and learn these interactions.
- Torch Management: Keeping your torchlight high (above 75) significantly reduces ambient stress gain. Always carry a plentiful supply of Torches.
- Target Priority: In combat, identify and eliminate stress-dealing enemies first. Examples include the Cultist Acolyte's "Stressful Incantation" or the Siren's "Song of the Deep."
Afflictions: The Darkest Descent
When a hero reaches 100 Stress and fails their resolve check, they will gain an Affliction. These are negative psychological states that severely hinder their performance and can even cause them to act against your will. Each Affliction has unique effects:
- Paranoid: Heroes refuse buffs, skip turns, and accuse allies.
- Abusive: Heroes insult allies, causing stress to the party, and may refuse healing.
- Selfish: Heroes steal loot, refuse to share food, and prioritize their own safety.
- Fearful: Heroes move to the back, refuse to attack, and may pass turns.
- Hopeless: Heroes refuse to use skills, gain massive debuffs to stats, and may pass turns.
- Masochistic: Heroes self-harm, refuse healing, and may attack allies.
- Irrational: Heroes use random skills, interact with curios without prompting, and may refuse commands.
Coping with Afflictions
An Afflicted hero is a liability. Your primary goal should be to reduce their stress to zero to remove the Affliction. This can be done via:
- Stress Healing Skills: As mentioned above, Jester's "Inspiring Tune" or Crusader's "Inspiring Cry" are vital.
- Camping Skills: "Encourage" or "Pep Talk" can target afflicted heroes.
- Hamlet Facilities: Upon returning to the Hamlet, afflicted heroes require treatment.
- Abbey: Heroes can Meditate, Flagellate, or Pray to reduce stress. Costs vary by hero and treatment.
- Tavern: Heroes can Gamble, Drink, or Brothel to reduce stress. Costs vary.
Strategic Tip: Some heroes have quirks that make them prefer specific treatments (e.g., "Gambler" prefers Gambling). use these preferences for more efficient stress relief.
Virtues: Moments of Clarity
Rarely, when a hero reaches 100 Stress, they will pass their resolve check and gain a Virtue. These are powerful, temporary buffs that can turn the tide of a difficult expedition. Virtues last for the remainder of the current dungeon run.
- Courageous: Increases damage, accuracy, and stress resistance for the hero and nearby allies.
- Focused: Significantly boosts accuracy, critical hit chance, and dodge.
- Stalwart: Increases max HP, protection, and stress resistance.
- Powerful: Increases damage, speed, and critical hit chance.
- Vigorous: Increases speed, dodge, and stress resistance.
Maximizing Virtue Potential
While Virtues are largely RNG-dependent, you can influence the odds:
- Trinkets: Certain trinkets increase Virtue chance. The Ancestral Trinket: Ancestor's Pen (found in the Darkest Dungeon) provides a +5% Virtue Chance, while the Hero's Ring (general drop) offers +3%. Equipping these on high-stress heroes can be a gamble worth taking.
- Hero Quirks: Positive quirks like "Resilient" can increase Virtue chance.
- Stress Management: Paradoxically, by keeping stress high but manageable, you increase the number of resolve checks, thus increasing the chances of a Virtue. This is a high-risk, high-reward strategy for experienced players.
Remember, the Hamlet's horrors are relentless. Master the ebb and flow of stress, and you might just keep your heroes from succumbing to the encroaching madness.
