The Farmstead: Endless Harvest

The Farmstead, introduced with The Color of Madness DLC, offers a unique, endless challenge distinct from the traditional dungeon crawls. Here, your goal is to survive waves of crystalline horrors and the relentless Comet Shard, pushing your roster to its limits for valuable Comet Shards, trinkets, and the exclusive Miller's equipment.

Preparing for the Endless Harvest

Unlike standard expeditions, the Farmstead requires specific preparation. There's no exploration, only combat, so optimize your party for sustained damage, stress healing, and blight/bleed resistance.

  • Party Composition: Focus on heroes with strong area-of-effect (AoE) attacks, reliable single-target damage for priority targets, and robust stress healing.
    • Good choices include:
      • Vestal: Essential for consistent healing and occasional stun.
      • Jester: Battle Ballad for buffs and Finale for burst damage, but primarily for stress healing with Inspiring Tune.
      • Man-at-Arms: Bolster for stress reduction and Guard for protecting vulnerable heroes. Retribution can also mark him for damage.
      • Highwayman: Point Blank Shot and Duelist's Advance for high damage and repositioning.
      • Shieldbreaker: Pierce and Adder's Kiss for armor piercing and blight, plus Aegis for protection.
      • Plague Doctor: Blight and stun capabilities are invaluable against many Farmstead enemies. Battlefield Medicine can cure blight/bleed and diseases.
  • Trinkets: Prioritize trinkets that boost damage, critical hit chance, speed, and stress resistance. Specific Farmstead trinkets like the Shard Dust or Shard of the Comet are excellent once acquired.
  • Provisions: You cannot provision for the Farmstead. Instead, you'll find provisions and curios within the dungeon itself. Focus on bringing heroes with strong self-sustain or party-wide utility.

Farmstead Mechanics: Waves and the Comet Shard

The Farmstead operates on a wave-based system. Each "round" consists of several combat encounters, culminating in a boss fight against the Miller or one of his lieutenants.

  • Wave Progression: Combat waves increase in difficulty and enemy variety as you progress. Expect to face a mix of Crystalline Aberrations, such as the Husk, Fungal Scratcher, Sleeper, and the dangerous Thing From The Stars.
  • The Comet Shard: This unique mechanic is central to the Farmstead. After each combat, a portion of the Comet Shard's energy is restored. When it reaches full, a powerful, party-wide stress and damage attack occurs. Managing the Comet Shard's energy is crucial.
    • Strategy: The goal is to defeat enemies quickly to minimize the number of Comet Shard activations. High damage output is key.
  • Curios: Between combat encounters, you'll find various curios.
    • The Miller's Remains: Use a Shovel to clear for a small amount of gold and potentially a minor buff.
    • The Shard Cluster: Interacting with this provides a small amount of Comet Shards, but can also inflict stress or a negative quirk. Using a Bandage can sometimes mitigate negative effects.
    • The Well: Offers a chance for healing or stress relief. Using Holy Water can improve the outcome.
    • The Abandoned Cart: Can yield provisions or trinkets. Using a Key can improve the loot.

Key Boss Encounters

Every few waves, you'll face a boss. Understanding their mechanics is vital for survival.

  • The Miller: The primary boss of the Farmstead. He summons spectral husks and buffs them.
    • Strategy: Focus fire on the Miller himself. His husks are less dangerous but can overwhelm you if left unchecked. AoE attacks are effective for clearing husks, but prioritize the Miller. Stress healing is crucial here due to his stress-inducing attacks.
  • The Thing From The Stars: A recurring mini-boss that appears randomly in regular waves and as a boss. It has high resistances and powerful attacks.
    • Strategy: This enemy is highly resistant to blight and bleed. Focus on raw damage. Stuns are effective for controlling its actions. Be prepared for high damage output and stress.

Rewards and Progression

The Farmstead offers unique rewards that are essential for progressing through the DLC and strengthening your Hamlet.

  • Comet Shards: The primary currency of the Farmstead. These are used to purchase exclusive trinkets, upgrade the Nomad Wagon, and unlock new districts.
  • Trinkets: Many powerful and unique trinkets can only be found or purchased from the Farmstead. Look out for set bonuses that synergize with specific hero classes.
  • Districts: The "Farmstead" district itself can be upgraded to provide various benefits, such as increased shard drop rates or improved hero stats within the Farmstead.

Remember, the Endless Harvest is a test of endurance and strategic planning. Don't be afraid to retreat if your party is too stressed or damaged. The rewards are great, but a dead hero is a permanent loss.
