Quest Overview & Preparation

This quest is a linear progression through several combat encounters, culminating in the final boss. There are no branching paths or exploration. Your party will face a series of increasingly difficult enemies, including unique variants of existing foes, before confronting the Heart of Darkness itself. Stress management and sustained healing are paramount, as there are no opportunities to camp or relieve stress between fights.

Recommended Provisions:
  • Food: 12-16 units (enough for healing and potential hunger checks, though less frequent than standard dungeons).
  • Torches: 0. This dungeon is perpetually dark, and torches have no effect.
  • Bandages: 6-8 units (for bleed effects).
  • Antivenom: 6-8 units (for blight effects).
  • Medicinal Herbs: 4-6 units (for debuffs and potential blight/bleed removal).
  • Holy Water: 2-4 units (for debuff resistance or specific trinket interactions).
  • Laudanum: 4-6 units (critical for stress healing, as there are no camp skills).
Party Composition & Strategy:

A balanced party is crucial. You need a combination of high damage output, reliable healing, stress relief, and potentially some stun/debuff capabilities. Remember, this is a long fight, so sustain is key.

Strong Hero Recommendations:
  • Vestal: Absolutely essential. Her group heal (Divine Grace) and single-target heal (Divine Comfort) are indispensable. She can also stun with Dazzling Light.
  • Crusader: Excellent damage, good self-sustain with Battle Heal, and powerful stress relief with Inspiring Cry. Can also stun.
  • Man-at-Arms: Prot buff (Bolster), Guard (Defender), and Retribution for riposte. His ability to protect squishier heroes and reduce incoming damage is invaluable.
  • Flagellant: High bleed damage, self-healing, and powerful stress relief with Exsanguinate/Redeem. Be careful with his low Deathblow resist.
  • Highwayman: High damage, especially with Duelist's Advance/Point Blank Shot combo. Can hit all ranks.
  • Bounty Hunter: High single-target damage, can mark and stun. Good against Eldritch.
  • Occultist: High single-target damage, debuffs, and a powerful heal (though unreliable). Can be risky without a secondary healer.
Sample Party Compositions:
  1. Balanced Sustain: Vestal (Heals/Stuns), Crusader (Damage/Stress/Heals), Man-at-Arms (Guard/Prot), Highwayman (Damage).
  2. Bleed/Stress Focus: Vestal (Heals/Stuns), Flagellant (Bleed/Heals/Stress), Hellion (Damage/Stuns), Jester (Stress/Damage).
  3. High Damage Burst: Vestal (Heals/Stuns), Occultist (Damage/Debuffs/Heals), Bounty Hunter (Damage/Stuns), Highwayman (Damage). (Note: Occultist heal can be risky; ensure strong damage output to compensate.)
Trinkets:

Prioritize trinkets that boost healing, damage, accuracy, and stress resistance. Avoid trinkets with significant drawbacks, especially those that increase stress received or reduce healing received. Specific recommendations:

  • Vestal: Tome of Holy Healing, Sacred Scroll.
  • Crusader: Ancestor's Pen, Heaven's Hairpin.
  • Man-at-Arms: Ancestor's Shield, Barricade.
  • Damage Dealers: Ancestor's Pistol/Musket Ball, Focus Ring, Sun Ring.
  • Stress Healers: Ancestor's Scroll, Book of Old Laws.

Walkthrough: The Gauntlet

The quest is divided into several rooms, each containing a combat encounter. There are no hallways, only transitions between rooms. Expect to face unique Eldritch enemies, often in combination with standard cultists or other abominations.

Encounter 1: The First Barrier

Typically features a mix of Cultist Acolytes, Brawlers, and potentially a Cultist Witch. Focus fire on the Witches first to prevent stress and blight. Manage stress early.

Encounter 2: The Flesh Hounds

Often includes unique Eldritch Hounds or larger, more resilient Eldritch enemies. These can inflict bleed and high damage. Prioritize stunning or eliminating them quickly.

Encounter 3: The Abomination's Maw

Expect to see more formidable Eldritch foes, possibly including the Shambler or other high-HP, high-damage creatures. This is where your party's sustain will be truly tested. Use your strongest attacks and healing.

Encounter 4: The Final Approach

This room often contains a combination of the toughest standard enemies you've faced, designed to drain your resources before the boss. Don't hold back on healing or stress relief here.

Boss Battle: The Heart of Darkness

The final confrontation is against the Heart of Darkness itself, a multi-stage boss with unique mechanics. There are two distinct phases, each requiring a different approach.

Phase 1: The Ancestor's Heart

The Heart of Darkness will appear as a pulsating, grotesque organ. It has high HP and several actions per round. Its primary attacks are:

  • Come Unto Your Maker: A devastating attack that targets a single hero, dealing massive damage and stress. It also marks the hero for death.
  • The Flesh is Willing: Summons a "Reflex of the Heart" minion. These minions are relatively weak but can inflict blight and stress.
  • The Blood is the Life: Heals the Heart of Darkness for a significant amount.
Strategy for Phase 1:
  1. Focus Fire: Your primary goal is to deal as much damage as possible to the Heart of Darkness. Ignore the Reflexes of the Heart unless they are causing critical stress or blight.
  2. Manage "Come Unto Your Maker": When a hero is targeted by "Come Unto Your Maker," they are essentially doomed. The next attack from the Heart will kill them instantly, regardless of HP or Deathblow resist.
  3. Sacrifice: This is the unique mechanic. You must sacrifice a hero to progress. When a hero is marked by "Come Unto Your Maker," use their next turn to perform a beneficial action (heal, buff, attack) and then allow them to be killed. This is unavoidable.
  4. Repeat: You will need to sacrifice two heroes in total during Phase 1 to weaken the Heart sufficiently. After the second sacrifice, the Heart will transition to Phase 2.
  5. Stress & Heal: Keep your remaining heroes topped up on HP and stress. This phase is a war of attrition.
Phase 2: The Ancestor's Reflection

After two sacrifices, the Heart of Darkness transforms into a more humanoid, monstrous form – a reflection of the Ancestor. This phase is a straightforward damage race.

  • Massive Damage: The Ancestor's Reflection has powerful melee and ranged attacks, often hitting multiple targets or inflicting significant stress.
  • No More Sacrifices: Unlike Phase 1, you do not need to sacrifice any more heroes.
  • High Crit Chance: Expect critical hits from the boss, leading to high stress and damage.
Strategy for Phase 2:
  1. All-Out Attack: Focus all remaining damage on the Ancestor's Reflection. This is the final push.
  2. Sustain: Keep your remaining heroes alive with constant healing and stress relief. Use any remaining Laudanum.
  3. Debuffs/Stuns: If your party has strong debuffs (e.g., Occultist's Weakening Curse) or reliable stuns, use them to reduce incoming damage or delay the boss's actions.
  4. Persevere: This is a test of endurance. Maintain your damage output and keep your heroes from reaching Death's Door.

Common Pitfalls & Tips:

  • Underestimating Stress: Stress is as dangerous as HP damage in this quest. Manage it constantly.
  • Lack of Healing: A single Vestal might struggle if your other heroes lack self-sustain. Consider a secondary healer or strong off-heals.
  • Ignoring Sacrifices: Trying to save a marked hero in Phase 1 is futile and will only prolong the fight, leading to more stress and damage. Embrace the mechanic.
  • Bringing Too Many Provisions: Torches are useless. Don't waste inventory slots.
  • Not Upgrading Skills/Gear: Ensure all heroes are fully upgraded (weapons, armor, skills) before attempting this quest.
  • Trinket Selection: Avoid trinkets that increase stress or reduce healing. Focus on raw stats.

Upon defeating the Heart of Darkness, the quest concludes, and you will witness the game's ending. Congratulations, you have cleansed the Hamlet... for now.
