The Shieldbreaker DLC

The Shieldbreaker DLC introduces a formidable new hero class, the Shieldbreaker, and a unique set of challenging encounters that test even the most seasoned adventurers. This guide will walk you through integrating the Shieldbreaker into your roster and conquering her unique nightmares.

Recruiting the Shieldbreaker

Unlike other heroes who arrive via the Stage Coach, the Shieldbreaker has a special introductory quest. After you've completed a few dungeons, a Town Event will trigger, announcing the arrival of a mysterious warrior. This event will offer a unique quest to recruit the Shieldbreaker. This quest is typically a short, easy dungeon, often in the Ruins or Weald, designed to introduce her basic mechanics. Successfully completing this quest will add a Shieldbreaker to your roster, usually at Resolve Level 0 or 1.

  • Initial Quest Preparation: Bring a balanced party. While the quest itself isn't overly difficult, it's a good opportunity to observe the Shieldbreaker's starting skills and plan for future party compositions.
  • Starting Skills: The Shieldbreaker begins with a core set of skills, including Pierce (armor-piercing attack), Puncture (debuff and move), and Serpent's Sway (Aegis block). Familiarize yourself with these as they are crucial to her playstyle.

Nightmare Encounters: A Serpent's Curse

The most distinctive feature of the Shieldbreaker DLC is the recurring Nightmare encounters. After recruiting a Shieldbreaker, she will periodically experience nightmares during camping. These nightmares manifest as unique combat encounters that pull your entire party into a surreal battle against spectral serpents.

There are three distinct Nightmare encounters, each increasing in difficulty and introducing new mechanics. These nightmares will occur randomly during camping, but only if a Shieldbreaker is present in the party. Completing all three nightmares is essential for unlocking her full potential and acquiring her unique trinkets.

Nightmare 1: The Serpent's Coil

This is the first and simplest nightmare. You will face a single Spectral Serpent. The key to this fight is understanding the serpent's mechanics:

  • Serpent's Scales: The Spectral Serpent has high PROT. The Shieldbreaker's Pierce skill is invaluable here, as it ignores a significant portion of the enemy's protection.
  • Blinding Venom: The serpent can inflict Blight and reduce accuracy. Bring Blight cures (Antivenom) and consider heroes with high accuracy or accuracy buffs.
  • Strategy: Focus fire on the serpent with your Shieldbreaker's Pierce. Support her with damage from other heroes and manage Blight. Stuns can also be effective to control its actions.

Nightmare 2: The Serpent's Embrace

This nightmare introduces two Spectral Serpents. The challenge here is managing multiple threats simultaneously.

  • Increased Pressure: With two serpents, the Blight and accuracy debuffs can quickly overwhelm your party. Prioritize healing and stress relief.
  • Target Prioritization: It's often best to focus down one serpent at a time to reduce incoming damage and debuffs. Use your Shieldbreaker's Pierce to quickly eliminate one.
  • Party Composition: Heroes with area-of-effect (AoE) attacks or skills that can hit multiple ranks can be beneficial, but single-target burst damage remains crucial for taking down the serpents quickly.

Nightmare 3: The Serpent's Maw

The final nightmare is the most challenging, featuring three Spectral Serpents and often a more aggressive attack pattern.

  • Overwhelming Blight: Be prepared for heavy Blight damage and accuracy debuffs. Stock up on Antivenom (at least 4-6) and consider bringing a Plague Doctor for her Blight cure and Blight resist buffs.
  • Aegis Scales: The serpents in this nightmare may have even higher PROT or gain temporary PROT buffs. The Shieldbreaker's Pierce is absolutely essential.
  • Survival Strategy:
    1. Initial Focus: Try to eliminate one serpent as quickly as possible using your Shieldbreaker's Pierce and other high-damage skills.
    2. Stress Management: The constant Blight and debuffs will generate significant stress. Bring a Jester or Crusader for stress healing.
    3. Aegis Blocks: Utilize the Shieldbreaker's Serpent's Sway to block incoming attacks, especially from serpents that are about to act. This can mitigate a lot of damage.
    4. Stuns and Debuffs: Stuns (from heroes like Hellion, Crusader, or Abomination) and debuffs (like damage reduction or accuracy debuffs) can help control the fight.

Shieldbreaker Trinkets

Upon successfully completing each Nightmare encounter, your Shieldbreaker will acquire a unique trinket. These trinkets are powerful and synergize well with her abilities:

  • Nightmare 1 Trinket: Typically provides bonuses to Blight resistance or Blight damage.
  • Nightmare 2 Trinket: Often enhances her damage output or provides additional defensive capabilities.
  • Nightmare 3 Trinket: The most powerful, offering significant boosts to her core stats, critical hit chance, or further enhancing her unique skills like Serpent's Sway. These are often considered "best-in-slot" for a Shieldbreaker.

Remember, the Shieldbreaker is a highly mobile, damage-dealing hero with excellent armor-piercing capabilities and self-sustain through Aegis blocks. Mastering her unique mechanics and conquering her nightmares will unlock a powerful asset for your roster.
