10.3 Farming & Gardening — DayZ Guide
In DayZ, sustainable food sources are vital for long-term survival. Farming and gardening offer a reliable way to cultivate your own food, reducing reliance on risky scavenging runs. Learn the basics of planting, tending, and harvesting crops to secure your sustenance.
While finding canned goods is common early on, these resources are finite and often contested. Establishing a farm provides a consistent supply of fresh produce, which is not only filling but also offers essential vitamins. This advanced survival technique can be a game-changer.
Essential Farming Items:
- Seeds: Found in garden centers, supermarkets, and sometimes in houses. Common types include Potatoes, Tomatoes, Zucchini, Pumpkins, and Corn.
- Trowel/Shovel: Required to till the soil and plant seeds.
- Water Source: A well, river, or collected rainwater is needed to water your crops.
- Fertilizer (Optional but Recommended): Found in garden centers or sometimes in sheds. Speeds up crop growth and increases yield.
Planting Your Crops:
- Find a Suitable Location: Choose an area with good sunlight and proximity to a water source. Open fields are ideal, but small plots can be cultivated near your base.
- Till the Soil: Use a trowel or shovel to prepare a patch of ground. This will create a tilled plot.
- Plant the Seeds: Open your inventory, select the seeds, and choose the 'Plant' option. You can plant seeds directly into the tilled soil.
- Water Your Crops: Use a canteen, bottle, or pot filled with water to water the planted seeds.
Tending Your Garden:
Crops require regular watering and, ideally, fertilizer to grow efficiently. Monitor your crops daily.
| Crop Type | Growth Time (Approx.) | Watering Needs | Fertilizer Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Potatoes | ~2-3 hours | Moderate | Faster growth, higher yield. |
| Tomatoes | ~3-4 hours | High | Faster growth, higher yield. |
| Zucchini | ~3-4 hours | Moderate | Faster growth, higher yield. |
| Pumpkins | ~4-5 hours | Moderate | Faster growth, higher yield. |
| Corn | ~4-5 hours | Moderate | Faster growth, higher yield. |
Harvesting and Consumption:
Once crops are fully grown, they will appear as mature plants. Interact with them to harvest. You can then eat them raw or cook them over a fire for better nutritional value and to prevent potential sickness from certain raw produce.
Tip: Burying harvested crops in a dry bag or container can preserve them for longer periods, acting as a natural pantry.
