2.1 Character Customization
In DayZ, your journey begins with a blank slate. While character customization is limited, understanding the few options available can subtly influence your early game. You'll choose from a selection of pre-set faces, hairstyles, and clothing. These choices are purely cosmetic and do not offer any gameplay advantages. However, the initial clothing you spawn with can provide a very minor amount of warmth and inventory space. Pay attention to the starting gear; a t-shirt offers less protection than a jacket, and a backpack is a crucial early find.
The character creation screen presents you with several faces, each with different beard and hair options. While you can't sculpt your character's features, you can select a combination that you find aesthetically pleasing. The primary focus here is on the initial clothing. You'll spawn with a set of clothes that offer varying degrees of insulation and carrying capacity. For instance, a simple t-shirt and jeans provide minimal warmth, while a jacket and cargo pants offer more. Always check your starting outfit and consider it a temporary measure until you can find better gear. The goal is to quickly acquire more practical clothing that offers better protection from the elements and more inventory slots.
Initial Clothing Breakdown:
- Shirt/Jacket: Provides insulation. Jackets are generally warmer and may offer more pockets.
- Pants: Offer insulation and can have pockets for small items. Cargo pants are ideal for their extra storage.
- Shoes: Protect your feet and can slightly affect movement speed.
- Headwear: Offers insulation and can sometimes conceal your appearance.
- Gloves: Protect your hands from the cold and can prevent minor damage from certain actions.
While you can't change your character's gender or body type, the visual aspect of your survivor is the extent of customization. The real customization comes later through the gear you find and the decisions you make. Don't spend too long agonizing over your character's appearance; focus on getting into the world and finding essential survival items. The initial clothing is a starting point, and you'll be looking to upgrade it as soon as possible to improve your survivability against the harsh environment and its inhabitants.
