Medical & First Aid

Survival in DayZ is a constant battle against injury and illness. Mastering the medical system, from basic wound care to treating complex ailments, is paramount to staying alive. Understanding how to find, use, and even craft medical supplies will be your most valuable asset.

Your character's health is represented by several key indicators: Health, Blood, and Stamina. Injuries can affect these, leading to reduced effectiveness, incapacitation, or death. The medical system is desed to be realistic, requiring careful management of resources and knowledge of treatment procedures.

Common Injuries and Their Treatments:

  • Bleeding: Indicated by blood splatters on your screen and a red icon. Caused by cuts, gunshots, or animal attacks. Treat by applying a Rag, Bandage, or Sterile Bandage.
  • Broken Bones: Characterized by a cracking sound, inability to sprint, and severely impaired aiming. Caused by falls or severe impacts. Treat by crafting and applying a Splint (2x Wooden Sticks + 1x Rag). Painkillers are also recommended.
  • Shock: A state of severe injury or blood loss that can lead to unconsciousness. Treated with Morphine Auto-Injector or by restoring blood and health.
  • Sickness (e.g., Food Poisoning, Flu): Caused by consuming rotten food, dirty water, or exposure to contaminated areas. Symptoms vary but can include vomiting, coughing, and health loss. Treat with Charcoal Tablets (for food poisoning) or by resting and staying warm.
  • Hypothermia: Caused by prolonged exposure to cold, wet conditions. Symptoms include blurred vision, shaky hands, and eventual death. Treat by getting dry, staying warm (e.g., by a fire), and wearing appropriate clothing.

Key Medical Items:

  • Rags: Found everywhere, used to craft bandages and clean wounds.
  • Bandages (Rag, Improvised, Sterile): Used to stop bleeding and cover wounds.
  • Splints: Essential for treating broken bones.
  • Painkillers (Tramadol, Codeine, Morphine): Reduce pain, improve aiming, and can help with shock.
  • Alcohol Wipes/Rubbing Alcohol: Used to disinfect wounds and prevent infection.
  • Charcoal Tablets: Treat food poisoning.
  • Medical Spray: Can be used to disinfect wounds.
  • Blood Bag Kit/IV Start Kit: Used for blood transfusions to restore lost blood. Requires compatible blood types.
  • Surgical Kit: Used for more advanced wound treatment, like bullet removal.

Medical Crafting:

  • Rag Bandage: Combine 1x Rag with another Rag.
  • Improvised Bandage: Combine 1x Rag with a Sharpened Stick or Makeshift Knife.
  • Splint: Combine 2x Wooden Sticks with 1x Rag.

Tips for Medical Survival:

  • Always Carry Supplies: Keep a good stock of bandages, painkillers, and at least one splint.
  • Prioritize Stopping Bleeding: Bleeding out is one of the fastest ways to die. Address it immediately.
  • Preventative Care: Eat well-cooked food, drink clean water, and wear appropriate clothing to avoid sickness and hypothermia.
  • Know Your Limits: Don't take unnecessary risks that could lead to injury.
  • Teamwork: If playing with others, share medical knowledge and supplies.
