Stage 1: Coastal Survival and Initial Scavenging
The initial hours of any DayZ life are the most critical. Your goal is to secure basic necessities and move away from the highly contested coast. Survival in this stage depends on efficiency and knowing exactly what to prioritize before your calorie reserves hit zero.
Vital Early-Game Items
Your first search should focus on residential houses and small sheds. Prioritize finding a sharp tool (knife, screwdriver, or stone blade) as it is the most versatile survival tool, allowing you to skin bark for friction fires and open canned goods. Next, secure a container for water, such as a plastic bottle or canteen. Lastly, look for warm clothing (high insulation) to prevent thermal shock, as rain or nighttime temperatures can quickly lead to hypothermia.
Managing Basic Needs
Prioritize your needs in this order: Hydration, Warmth, and then Energy. Do not drink from ponds or streams unless you have chlorine tablets; instead, locate town water pumps which provide safe, clean water. To manage hunger without a weapon, search the base of fruit trees (Apple, Pear, Plum) for dropped fruit. Eat everything you find immediately to save inventory space and increase your "internal" calorie storage, which provides a longer buffer than carrying food in your jacket.
Coastal Scavenging Strategies
Avoid the main roads and open beaches where you are a visible target for snipers. Move through the backyards of coastal towns and check rowboats along the shoreline for fishing gear and sodas. If a town looks picked clean (evidenced by open doors and no loot), don't linger. Head inland immediately to Tier 2 zones where competition is lower and the quality of loot increases significantly.
