Retrieve the Singularity Core

In Chapter 9: Dead on Arrival, your primary objective shifts from the Ishimura's internal struggles to a desperate salvage mission. The USG Ishimura's shuttle requires a critical component to function: the Singularity Core. This powerful device is currently located aboard the derelict USM Valor, a military vessel that has suffered a catastrophic encounter with the Necromorphs. Be warned, the Valor is a hostile environment, crawling with advanced Necromorph variants and environmental hazards.

Objective: Board the USM Valor

The Valor's wreckage is accessible from the Ishimura's Hangar Bay. Prepare for immediate combat upon docking, as the military ship is not as abandoned as it seems.

  • Location: Hangar Bay (USG Ishimura) -> Docking Bay (USM Valor)
  • Enemies: Expect a mix of standard Slashers and Lurkers, but be especially wary of the more agile and dangerous Twitchers.
  • Preparation: Ensure your stasis module is fully charged. The Valor is dark and claustrophobic, making the Plasma Cutter and Pulse Rifle excellent choices for their versatility. Consider bringing the Line Gun for its alt-fire crowd control.

Navigating the Valor & Encountering Twitchers

Upon boarding, you'll immediately notice the Valor's military-grade architecture and the grim aftermath of its crew's demise. The ship is infested with Twitchers – Necromorphs that have assimilated stasis modules, granting them incredible speed.

  • Key Areas:
    • Medical Bay: Often contains valuable medkits and ammo. Beware of a potential ambush here.
    • Crew Quarters: Explore for logs and credits. Watch out for lurking Necromorphs in cramped spaces.
    • Armory: May contain weapon upgrades or schematics. Usually guarded by tougher enemies.
  • Twitcher Strategy:
    • Stasis is Key: Their speed makes them difficult to hit. Immediately apply stasis to slow them down, then target their limbs.
    • Force Gun: The Force Gun's primary fire is excellent for pushing them back and creating distance. Its alt-fire can dismember multiple limbs if they're grouped.
    • Contact Beam: For high-damage output, a fully charged Contact Beam shot to a slowed Twitcher's limbs can quickly dispatch them.
    • Environmental Hazards: Use explosive barrels or exposed electrical conduits to your advantage when Twitchers are nearby.

Locating the Singularity Core in the Cargo Bay

Your search will eventually lead you to the Valor's expansive Cargo Bay. This area is heavily damaged and serves as the arena for a significant encounter.

  • Location: USM Valor Cargo Bay
  • Primary Threat: A Brute will emerge, protecting the Singularity Core. This powerful Necromorph is heavily armored.
  • Brute Strategy:
    • Target the Back: The Brute's front is invulnerable. You must get behind it to damage the exposed yellow sacs on its back.
    • Stasis & Flank: Use stasis to slow its charge, then quickly strafe around it to expose its weak point.
    • Line Gun Alt-Fire: The Line Gun's laser trap can be placed in its path to inflict significant damage as it charges.
    • Plasma Cutter/Pulse Rifle: Once its back is exposed, focus fire with high-damage weapons.
    • Kinesis Objects: The Cargo Bay often has explosive canisters or other objects you can use Kinesis on to throw at the Brute's back.
  • Retrieving the Core: Once the Brute is defeated, the Singularity Core will be accessible. Interact with it to initiate the retrieval sequence.

Escape from the Valor

With the Singularity Core secured, the Valor's structural integrity rapidly deteriorates. The ship's engine room becomes highly unstable, triggering a frantic escape sequence.

  • Environmental Hazards:
    • Collapsing Corridors: Sections of the ship will crumble, blocking paths or creating new ones. Be aware of falling debris.
    • Fire Hazards: Ruptured fuel lines and electrical fires will create dangerous obstacles. Use Kinesis to move obstructions or Stasis to slow moving hazards.
    • Zero-G Sections: You may encounter zero-gravity areas requiring careful navigation while avoiding debris and enemies.
  • Enemies: Expect a final wave of Necromorphs, often including Exploders and more Twitchers, attempting to impede your escape. Prioritize evasion over prolonged combat if possible.
  • Time Limit: While not explicitly timed, the increasing environmental instability creates a sense of urgency. Keep moving!
  • Return Path: Retrace your steps through the Valor, heading back towards the docking bay where you initially entered.

Rewards & Loot (Upon successful completion)

  • Singularity Core: Essential story item.
  • Credits: Numerous credit caches scattered throughout the Valor.
  • Ammo: Expect a decent haul of various ammo types, especially for military-grade weapons.
  • Medkits: Standard and Large Medkits are common.
  • Text Logs/Audio Logs: Several logs detailing the Valor's demise and the military's involvement with the Marker.
  • Weapon Upgrades/Schematics: Possible to find schematics for the Flamethrower or Pulse Rifle upgrades.

Successfully retrieving the Singularity Core is a major step forward in your mission to escape the Ishimura. The Red Marker, however, remains safely on Aegis VII at this stage of the story, a much larger challenge for later.
