Interface & HUD Explained
Understanding Colt's heads-up display (HUD) and the various interface elements is crucial for surviving Blackreef's endless loop. This section breaks down every vital piece of information presented to you, from health and energy to objective markers and enemy indicators, ensuring you can make informed decisions in the heat of battle and during exploration.
The Heads-Up Display (HUD)
The HUD provides real-time information without requiring you to pause the game. Mastering its cues is key to efficient gameplay.
- Health Bar (Bottom Left): This red bar indicates Colt's current health. When it depletes, Colt dies. Remember, you have three "Residuum" charges per loop (represented by three small circles above the health bar) before a permanent death sends you back to the morning. Look for health packs (small white boxes) often found near enemy patrols, in bathrooms, or within secure areas to replenish lost health.
- Power Bar (Bottom Left, below Health): The blue bar represents Colt's Power, which fuels his various Slabs (abilities). Using abilities like Shift or Aether consumes Power. This bar regenerates slowly over time, but you can instantly refill it by picking up Power-restoring items, often dropped by defeated enemies or found in specific locations.
- Weapon Information (Bottom Right):
- Current Weapon Icon: Shows the weapon Colt is currently wielding.
- Ammo Count: Displays the remaining ammunition in your current magazine and your total reserve ammo for that weapon type. Always keep an eye on this, especially with high-fire-rate weapons like the LIMP-10 or the STRELAK 50-50.
- Weapon Perks: Small icons below the ammo count indicate any attached perks to your weapon, such as "Steady Aim" or "Hailfire."
- Objective Marker (Center-Top): A dynamic marker that points towards your current primary objective. This is invaluable for navigating Blackreef's complex environments. You can cycle through active objectives in your journal to change which one is tracked.
- Enemy Indicators (Around Crosshair): When enemies are nearby, small red chevrons will appear around your crosshair, indicating their general direction. The closer and more directly they face you, the more prominent these indicators become. A solid red chevron means they are actively aware of your presence or attacking.
- Stealth Indicator (Center-Bottom): A small eye icon. When open, enemies can see you. When closed, you are hidden. This is crucial for stealth approaches. Pay attention to its state, especially when using abilities like Aether.
- Residuum Counter (Top Right): Displays your current accumulated Residuum, the valuable resource used to infuse items and carry them over between loops. This counter increases as you collect Residuum from glowing objects or defeated Visionaries.
- Notification Feed (Top Left): Briefly displays important messages, such as "Residuum Collected," "New Trinket Acquired," or "Objective Updated."
The Pause Menu & Journal
Pressing the pause button (usually Options on PlayStation, Esc on PC) brings up the main menu, offering deeper insights and management options.
- Journal: This is your most important tool for understanding the loop and tracking your progress.
- Leads: Divided into "Visionary Leads" and "Arsenal Leads." Visionary Leads guide you on how to eliminate the eight Visionaries, while Arsenal Leads help you find powerful weapons and Slabs. Each lead provides specific hints, locations, and times of day to investigate. For example, the "Space Invader" lead will guide you to Aleksis Dorsey's party at the Updaam mansion in the evening.
- Discoveries: Records important information you've uncovered, such as codes, safe combinations (like the one for the safe in Charlie's Condition Detachment game in Karl's Bay), and character bios.
- Current Objective: Allows you to review and select which objective you want to track on your HUD.
- Loadout: Here you manage Colt's equipment.
- Weapons: Equip up to three weapons. You can swap between them using the D-Pad (console) or scroll wheel/number keys (PC). Remember to infuse your favorite weapons with Residuum to keep them across loops!
- Slabs: Equip up to two Slabs (abilities) like Shift, Aether, or Havoc. Each Slab can be upgraded by collecting duplicates from defeated Visionaries. For instance, defeating Harriet multiple times allows you to upgrade her Nexus Slab.
- Trinkets: Equip up to four Character Trinkets and up to three Weapon Trinkets per weapon. Character Trinkets provide passive buffs (e.g., "Sprinter" for faster movement, "Hardy" for more health), while Weapon Trinkets enhance specific weapons (e.g., "Sure Shot" for increased accuracy, "Perforator" for armor penetration). Always infuse your preferred Trinkets!
- Map: Provides an overhead view of the current district, showing your location, objective markers, and known points of interest. Useful for planning routes and identifying potential enemy patrols.
- Options: Standard game settings for audio, video, controls, and accessibility.
Interaction Prompts
When you approach an interactable object, a prompt will appear on screen, usually indicating the action and the button to press. This could be "Open Door," "Pick Up [Item Name]," "Hack," or "Use Terminal." Always keep an eye out for these, as they often lead to valuable loot, lore, or progress.
