Julianna's Abilities & Counterplay
Julianna Blake, the Visionary hunter, is your primary antagonist in Deathloop. Understanding her unique abilities and how to effectively counter them is paramount to breaking the loop. She's not just a random NPC; she's a player-controlled threat (or a sophisticated AI if playing offline) designed to stop Colt at all costs. Mastering these counter-strategies will significantly increase your survival rate and your chances of assassinating the other Visionaries.
Julianna's Slab: Aether
Aether is Julianna's signature Slab, granting her temporary invisibility. This is her primary tool for ambushes and escapes.
- How it Works: When activated, Julianna becomes almost completely invisible. She can still be heard if she moves quickly or fires a weapon.
- Counterplay:
- Environmental Awareness: Look for distortions in the air, especially near light sources or water. Aether isn't perfect invisibility.
- Sound Cues: Listen for her footsteps, the faint hum of the Slab activating, or the sound of her weapon reloading.
- Area-of-Effect (AoE) Weapons: Weapons like the Fourpounder with the Explosive Rounds perk, or the Strelak 50-50 shotgun, can hit invisible targets if you have a general idea of her location.
- Turrets: Deploying Turrets (found in various locations like Updaam, Karl's Bay, or The Complex) can automatically target and reveal an invisible Julianna. Place them strategically in chokepoints.
- Sense Perk: Equipping the Sense Trinket (found randomly on enemies or in loot containers) allows you to automatically tag enemies, including an invisible Julianna, within a certain radius. This is incredibly useful.
- Shift Slab: If you have the Shift Slab, a quick teleport can often put you behind her or out of her line of fire, allowing you to re-engage.
Julianna's Slab: Havoc
Julianna often uses Havoc, a powerful defensive Slab that absorbs incoming damage and reflects a portion back at Colt.
- How it Works: When Havoc is active, Julianna glows with an orange aura. She takes significantly reduced damage, and attacking her directly will cause you to take damage as well.
- Counterplay:
- Disengage and Relocate: The best strategy against Havoc is to stop shooting and break line of sight. Use the environment to your advantage.
- Wait it Out: Havoc has a limited duration. Once it wears off, she'll be vulnerable again.
- Grenades & Traps: While direct gunfire is risky, a well-placed Grenade (found commonly throughout Blackreef) or a Trip Mine (often found in enemy patrols or specific areas like The Complex) can still deal damage without putting you in direct harm's way.
- Melee Attacks: Melee attacks (using your machete) do not trigger the damage reflection from Havoc. If you can get close, a few quick swings can be effective, especially if she's low on health.
- Shift Slab: Use Shift to quickly get behind her or to a vantage point where you can wait for Havoc to expire.
Julianna's Slab: Nexus
Julianna can also use Nexus, linking multiple enemies together so that damage dealt to one is shared among all linked targets.
- How it Works: Julianna will often use Nexus on groups of Eternalists to create a deadly chain reaction. If you target one linked enemy, all linked enemies take damage.
- Counterplay:
- Prioritize Julianna: If you see her using Nexus, your primary goal should be to eliminate Julianna herself. Once she's down, the Nexus links disappear.
- Exploit the Link: If Julianna isn't immediately accessible, use the Nexus to your advantage. A single headshot on one linked Eternalist can take out the entire group, including Julianna if she's part of the link. This is especially effective with high-damage weapons like the Rapier or Sepulchra Breteira.
- AoE Damage: Weapons like the Fourpounder or the Strelak 50-50 are excellent for clearing linked groups quickly.
- Environmental Hazards: Lure linked enemies near explosive barrels or ledges. A single explosion or push can take out the entire group.
Julianna's Slab: Karnesis
Karnesis allows Julianna to telekinetically throw enemies (and Colt) around, disrupting your aim and positioning.
- How it Works: Julianna will use Karnesis to lift you into the air, slam you into walls, or throw you off ledges. This can be disorienting and deal significant damage.
- Counterplay:
- Stay Mobile: Constant movement makes you a harder target for Karnesis. Don't stand still in the open.
- Cover is Key: use cover to break line of sight. Karnesis requires a direct line of sight to activate.
- Shift Slab: If you're hit by Karnesis, activating Shift can sometimes cancel the effect or allow you to quickly reposition before taking fall damage.
- Weapon Accuracy: If you're lifted, try to maintain your aim. A well-placed headshot can interrupt her ability.
- Fall Damage Reduction: Equip the Sprinter or Hardy Trinkets (found randomly) to mitigate some of the damage from being thrown.
General Julianna Counterplay Strategies
- Hack the Antenna: Your primary objective when Julianna invades is to hack the antenna to open the tunnels. This gives you an escape route if the fight goes south. The antenna is always marked on your HUD.
- Scout and Prepare: Before engaging, take a moment to scout the area. Identify potential cover, chokepoints, and environmental hazards.
- Listen for Her Dialogue: Julianna often taunts Colt over the radio. Her dialogue can provide clues about her location or intentions.
- Use Your Own Slabs: Don't forget your own arsenal. Shift is excellent for repositioning, Havoc can turn the tables in a direct confrontation, and Nexus can clear her Eternalist support.
- Weapon Loadout:
- Range: A long-range weapon like the Sepulchra Breteira or Rapier is crucial for engaging her from a distance.
- Close-Quarters: A powerful shotgun like the Strelak 50-50 or Vopat Trencher is invaluable for close-range encounters.
- Utility: Consider a weapon with a good rate of fire like the LIMP-10 or Fourpounder for general combat and dealing with her Eternalist allies.
- Trinkets:
- Sure Shot: Increases weapon accuracy, helpful for hitting a moving Julianna.
- Hardy/Sprinter: Reduces damage taken, especially useful against Karnesis or explosive attacks.
- Sense: Crucial for detecting an invisible Julianna.
- Bloodthirsty: Increases damage after a melee kill, good for unexpected close-quarters engagements.
- Ambush Her: Julianna is often predictable in her approach. Set up Trip Mines in doorways or chokepoints, or hide in a good vantage point with a sniper rifle.
- Don't Be Afraid to Retreat: If you're outmatched or low on health, disengage and find a safer position. Julianna will often pursue, but you can use this to lead her into traps or a more favorable engagement zone.
