Phalanx Archstone (1-2): The Lord's Path to the Tower Knight
Welcome, Slayer of Demons, to the Lord's Path, the treacherous route leading from the Boletarian Palace gates to the formidable Tower Knight. This area, often referred to as Boletarian Palace 1-2, is a significant step up in difficulty from the tutorial and 1-1, introducing more resilient enemies, environmental hazards, and a crucial early-game accessory. Prepare for a gauntlet of armored soldiers, cunning crossbowmen, and the infamous Dragon Bridge.
Walkthrough: Navigating the Lord's Path
Upon entering the Phalanx Archstone, you'll find yourself at the base of a long, winding path. Proceed with caution:
- Initial Ascent and Watchtower:
- Immediately after the Archstone, you'll encounter a Spear Soldier and a Sword Soldier. Dispatch them carefully.
- As you ascend the first ramp, look to your left for a small alcove containing a Soul of a Lost Undead.
- Continue up the path. You'll soon reach a watchtower. Inside, a Crossbow Soldier guards the upper level, and another Sword Soldier patrols below. Clear them out.
- Item Pickup: On the upper level of the watchtower, you'll find a Light Crossbow and some Standard Arrows.
- The Dragon Bridge Approach:
- Exit the watchtower and continue along the path. You'll encounter more Spear Soldiers and Sword Soldiers.
- As you approach the large gate, a Red Eye Knight will be visible in the distance. This enemy is extremely dangerous at this stage of the game. It's recommended to avoid engaging him directly for now. He guards the path to the shortcut back to the Archstone.
- Instead of confronting the Red Eye Knight, take the path to the right, leading down a set of stairs.
- You'll encounter a few more Spear Soldiers and Sword Soldiers on this lower path.
- The Dragon Bridge:
- This iconic section requires precise timing. A massive red dragon periodically sweeps across the bridge, incinerating anything in its path.
- Strategy: Observe the dragon's pattern. It typically makes two passes in quick succession, then a longer pause. Your goal is to run from safe alcove to safe alcove during the pauses.
- First Alcove: After the first dragon pass, sprint to the first alcove on the left. Inside, you'll find a Soul of a Lost Undead.
- Second Alcove: Wait for the next dragon pass, then sprint to the second alcove on the right. Here, you'll find the invaluable Cling Ring. This ring significantly reduces the HP penalty in Soul Form, making it almost essential for new players.
- Final Sprint: After the next pass, sprint to the end of the bridge. Be wary of a Spear Soldier waiting at the end.
- Post-Dragon Bridge & Shortcut:
- Once across the bridge, you'll find a narrow pathway. A Crossbow Soldier is positioned on a ledge above, and a Sword Soldier patrols below. Deal with them.
- Continue forward, and you'll reach a fog gate. This leads to the Tower Knight boss.
- Optional Shortcut: Before entering the fog gate, look to your left for a path leading down. This path will loop back to the beginning of the level, allowing you to unlock a shortcut gate near the Red Eye Knight, making subsequent runs to the boss much faster. This path is guarded by several Spear Soldiers and Sword Soldiers.
Notable Item Locations
- Cling Ring: On the Dragon Bridge, in the second alcove on the right. Essential for Soul Form survivability.
- Light Crossbow & Standard Arrows: Upper level of the first watchtower.
- Soul of a Lost Undead: Several scattered throughout the level, including the first alcove after the Archstone and the first alcove on the Dragon Bridge.
- Ring of Herculean Strength: (Missable!) After defeating the Tower Knight, return to the area where the Red Eye Knight was guarding the shortcut. If you haven't killed him yet, he'll still be there. Defeat him to claim this ring, which increases your item burden limit.
Enemy Encounters & Tips
The enemies in 1-2 are generally more resilient and aggressive than those in 1-1. Here's a breakdown:
- Spear Soldiers: These enemies have shields and long-range attacks. Use a shield yourself to block their thrusts, then counter-attack. Kicking can also break their guard.
- Sword Soldiers: More aggressive, often performing combos. Dodge their attacks and punish their recovery.
- Crossbow Soldiers: Annoying ranged threats. Prioritize them when possible. Use cover or roll to close the distance quickly.
- Red Eye Knight: A mini-boss level enemy. Extremely high HP and damage. At low levels, it's best to lure him into a parry/riposte setup or use ranged attacks from a safe distance. He drops a Ring of Herculean Strength upon defeat.
- Dogs: Fast and can inflict bleed. Block their initial lunge, then attack.
Boss Strategy: Tower Knight
The Tower Knight is a massive, heavily armored foe, but his true challenge lies in the surrounding environment.
Recommended Loadout:
- Weapon: A fast weapon for dealing with archers (e.g., Falchion, Uchigatana) and a weapon with good vertical reach for the boss (e.g., Spear, Halberd).
- Shield: A 100% physical block shield (e.g., Knight's Shield, Heater Shield).
- Magic/Miracles: Soul Arrow is excellent for the archers. Heal is always useful.
- Consumables: Plenty of Grass (healing items).
Phase 1: Eliminating the Archers
- Enter the Arena: As soon as you pass through the fog gate, sprint to either the left or right staircase. Do NOT engage the Tower Knight yet.
- Ascend and Clear: Climb the stairs to the upper walkway. You'll find a total of eight Crossbow Soldiers (four on each side) positioned around the arena. These archers will relentlessly fire at you and can quickly deplete your health.
- Prioritize Archers: Systematically clear out all the archers. They are relatively weak individually. Use your shield to block their bolts as you approach, then dispatch them with a few quick hits. Magic like Soul Arrow is very effective here.
- Collect Rewards: Each archer drops a Soul of a Lost Undead.
Phase 2: Engaging the Tower Knight
Once all archers are down, the Tower Knight becomes a much more manageable fight.
- Target the Ankles: The Tower Knight's primary weakness is his ankles. Descend to the arena floor and position yourself behind him or to his sides.
- Attack Strategy: Focus all your attacks on his glowing blue ankles. After taking enough damage, an ankle will glow brighter and he will stagger.
- Exploit the Stagger: When he staggers, he will fall to one knee. This is your window to deal massive damage. Run to his head and unleash your strongest attacks. A plunging attack from the upper walkway (if you can time it) can also be devastating, but is risky.
- Avoid Attacks:
- Shield Slam: He will periodically slam his massive shield into the ground, creating a shockwave. Roll away from this.
- Foot Stomp: If you're too close to his feet, he'll try to stomp on you. Roll away.
- Spear Thrust/Sweep: His spear has a long reach. Observe his wind-up animations and roll through or away from his attacks.
- Magic Blast (Rare): If you stay too far away for too long, he might charge a magic blast. This is easily dodged by rolling.
- Repeat: Continue to attack his ankles, exploit the stagger, and dodge his attacks until he falls.
Common Pitfalls:
- Ignoring Archers: Trying to fight the Tower Knight with the archers alive is a recipe for disaster. Clear them first!
- Getting Trapped: Don't get cornered by the Tower Knight. Maintain situational awareness and use the open space of the arena.
- Greed: Don't get greedy with attacks. Get a few hits on his ankles or head, then be ready to roll away from his next attack.
Upon defeating the Tower Knight, you will receive the Iron Demon's Soul and the Tower Knight's Archstone will activate, allowing you to warp directly to this location.
