Leveling Up & Soul Spending
The core of character progression in Demon's Souls revolves around leveling up by spending Souls. This process allows you to increase your character's attributes, making them stronger, more resilient, and more capable of wielding powerful equipment and magic. Making informed decisions about where to spend your Souls is paramount to success.
Souls are earned by defeating enemies and bosses, and they serve as both currency and experience points. To level up, you must return to the Nexus and speak with the Maiden in Black. Each level gained requires an increasing amount of Souls. The primary goal of leveling is to increase your character's attributes: Vitality, Intelligence, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Magic, Faith, and Luck. Each attribute governs different aspects of your character's performance.
Attribute Allocation Priorities:
- Vitality: Increases HP. Always a safe investment, especially for new players.
- Endurance: Increases Stamina and Equip Load. Crucial for sustained combat and wearing heavier armor.
- Strength/Dexterity: Invest in these based on the weapons you intend to use. Check weapon scaling for maximum effectiveness.
- Magic/Faith: Essential for sorcerers and miracle users, respectively.
- Intelligence: Increases MP and spell slots for sorcerers.
- Luck: Generally a lower priority, affecting item discovery and curse resistance.
When deciding where to allocate your Souls, consider your intended build. A Strength build will focus on Strength and Endurance, while a Magic build will prioritize Intelligence and Magic. Don't neglect Vitality and Endurance, as they are crucial for survival regardless of your offensive focus. Pay attention to the soft caps for each stat, where the benefits of further investment begin to diminish. For example, Strength and Dexterity often see diminishing returns after 40. Upgrading your weapons is often more impactful than simply leveling up, so balance your Soul spending between attributes and gear enhancement.
