Armor in Demon's Souls plays a vital role in your survivability, offering protection against physical and elemental damage. While it doesn't grant invincibility, the right set of armor can significantly reduce the damage you take, allowing you to withstand more hits and press your advantage in combat.
Armor is divided into four slots: Head, Body, Hands, and Legs. Each piece provides varying levels of defense against different damage types. The primary defensive stats are:
- Physical Defense: Reduces damage from physical attacks (swords, axes, arrows, etc.).
- Magic Defense: Reduces damage from magical attacks (spells, enchanted weapons).
- Fire Defense: Reduces damage from fire-based attacks (dragon breath, fire spells).
- Bleed Defense: Reduces the buildup of the bleed status effect.

Beyond raw defense, armor also contributes to your Equip Load. Each armor piece has a weight value, and the total weight of your equipped gear affects your movement speed and dodge effectiveness. If your Equip Load exceeds certain thresholds (typically 50% and 100% of your maximum), your dodge roll will become significantly slower and less effective, making you more vulnerable. Therefore, balancing defense with mobility is a key consideration.
Some armor sets, like the Brushwood Set or the Ancient King's Set, offer very high defense but are extremely heavy. Lighter sets, such as the Robe Set or Leather Set, provide less protection but allow for greater agility. There are also unique sets like the Old Raggedy Set, which offers minimal defense but has no weight, and the Binded Cross Set, which provides decent protection with moderate weight.
