Item Locations & Farming
Welcome, Slayer of Demons, to our comprehensive guide on locating and efficiently farming essential items in Boletaria. Mastering item acquisition is crucial for survival, character progression, and tackling the most formidable challenges Demon's Souls has to offer. This section will provide detailed walkthroughs for key consumables, upgrade materials, and valuable equipment.
Consumables: Healing & Utility
Maintaining a healthy stock of healing items and utility consumables is paramount. Knowing where to find them reliably can make the difference between victory and a swift return to the Nexus.
Grass Farming (Healing)
Grass is your primary source of in-combat healing. There are various types, each offering different amounts of HP restoration. Early on, you'll rely heavily on Crescent Grass and Late Moon Grass.
- Crescent Grass:
- Location: Abundant in Boletarian Palace (1-1, 1-2).
- Farming Strategy:
- Start at the Gates of Boletaria Archstone (1-1).
- Proceed through the initial area, defeating the Dreglings and Soldiers.
- Many of these enemies have a chance to drop Crescent Grass.
- The Dreglings near the first fog gate are particularly easy to dispatch quickly.
- Continue to the area with the first Blue-Eyed Knight and the ballista trap. More Dreglings and Soldiers here.
- After clearing, return to the Archstone and repeat. This route is quick and yields a decent amount of early-game healing.
- Late Moon Grass:
- Location: Commonly dropped by enemies in Stonefang Tunnel (2-1, 2-2) and Tower of Latria (3-1).
- Farming Strategy (Stonefang Tunnel):
- Warp to the Smithing Grounds Archstone (2-1).
- Head into the mine shaft. The Scale Miners and Fat Officials in this area frequently drop Late Moon Grass.
- The path to the first shortcut (elevator) is a good, contained farming route. Clear the miners and officials, then use a Nexus Bind or return to the Archstone to reset.
Spice Farming (MP Restoration)
Magic and miracles consume MP, making Spice an invaluable resource for spellcasters.
- Fresh Spice & Old Spice:
- Location: Frequently dropped by Priests and Prisoners in the Tower of Latria (3-1, 3-2).
- Farming Strategy (Tower of Latria):
- Warp to the Prison of Hope Archstone (3-1).
- The various Prisoners and Priests patrolling the cell blocks are excellent sources of both Fresh and Old Spice.
- A particularly efficient route involves clearing the first few cell blocks on the upper levels, then descending to the lower levels where more enemies are present.
- Be wary of the Mind Flayers; while they drop valuable items, they are dangerous. Focus on the easier-to-kill Prisoners and Priests for consistent Spice drops.
Upgrade Materials: Forging Stronger Gear
Upgrading your weapons and armor is essential. Different upgrade paths require specific stones. Here's where to find some common ones.
Hardstone & Sharpstone (Standard Upgrades)
These are the bread and butter for basic weapon enhancements.
- Hardstone Shards & Chunks:
- Location: Dropped by various enemies in Boletarian Palace (1-1, 1-2, 1-3).
- Farming Strategy (Boletarian Palace):
- The Dreglings, Soldiers, and especially the Blue-Eyed Knights in Boletarian Palace are your primary source.
- A good route is to start at the Inner Ward Archstone (1-3). Clear the area before the Penetrator boss fog gate, focusing on the Blue-Eyed Knights and Red-Eyed Knights (though the latter are tougher).
- The Red-Eyed Knights have a higher chance to drop Hardstone Chunks.
- Sharpstone Shards & Chunks:
- Location: Found in Stonefang Tunnel (2-1, 2-2).
- Farming Strategy (Stonefang Tunnel):
- The Scale Miners throughout Stonefang Tunnel are the best source for Sharpstone.
- Warp to the Smithing Grounds Archstone (2-1) and clear the initial mining areas.
- For Chunks, proceed deeper into the tunnels towards the Flamelurker Archstone (2-2). The Scale Miners in the lava-filled areas have a better chance to drop Chunks.
- Alternatively, the Crystal Lizards in Stonefang Tunnel also drop Sharpstone, but they are a finite resource per playthrough unless you manipulate World Tendency.
Bladestone (Sharp Upgrades)
Essential for Dexterity builds, Bladestone is notoriously rare.
- Bladestone Shards & Chunks:
- Location: Dropped by Black Skeletons in Shrine of Storms (4-1, 4-2).
- Farming Strategy (Shrine of Storms):
- Warp to the Island's Edge Archstone (4-1).
- The Black Skeleton wielding a Katana, located behind the illusionary wall near the starting Archstone, is a prime target for Bladestone Shards.
- For Bladestone Chunks and the incredibly rare Pure Bladestone, you'll need to farm the Black Skeleton in the secret passage leading to the Adjudicator Archstone (4-2). This skeleton is found after dropping down a hole near the first Reaper.
- Important: Equip the Large Sword of Searching (if you have it) and the Providential Ring to boost your item discovery rate. Consider farming in Pure Black World Tendency for increased drop rates, but be prepared for tougher enemies.
Dragonstone (Fire Upgrades)
For weapons that breathe fire, Dragonstone is key.
- Dragonstone Shards & Chunks:
- Location: Dropped by Bearbugs in Stonefang Tunnel (2-2).
- Farming Strategy (Stonefang Tunnel):
- Warp to the Flamelurker Archstone (2-2).
- Proceed into the lava-filled tunnels. The small and large Bearbugs here are your source for Dragonstone.
- The large Bearbugs have a higher chance to drop Chunks.
- Be cautious of their explosive attacks. Ranged attacks or hit-and-run tactics are effective.
Valuable Equipment & Unique Drops
Some items are not just for upgrading; they are powerful in their own right or unlock new possibilities.
Talisman of God (Miracle Catalyst)
- Location:
- Boletarian Palace (1-1): Found on a corpse near the first Blue-Eyed Knight, just before the ballista trap. It's on a ledge accessible by dropping down from the upper walkway.
- Shrine of Storms (4-1): Dropped by the Vanguard demon in the hidden area near the first Archstone. Defeating this optional boss early grants you access to this powerful catalyst.
- Significance: Essential for any character wishing to cast Miracles.
Cling Ring (HP Boost in Soul Form)
- Location:
- Boletarian Palace (1-1): From the Gates of Boletaria Archstone, proceed until you reach the area with the first fog gate and the two Dreglings. Instead of going through the fog, turn right and go up the stairs. Follow this path, past the crossbowmen, and you'll find it on a corpse on a ledge overlooking the starting area.
- Significance: Arguably the most important early-game ring. It reduces the HP penalty in Soul Form from 50% to 25%, making exploration significantly less punishing.
Ring of Herculean Strength (Increased Item Burden)
- Location:
- The Nexus: Given by Stockpile Thomas after you retrieve the Jade Hair Ornament from Boletarian Palace (1-1). The ornament is found on a corpse near the large gate that requires the Mausoleum Key.
- Significance: Increases your maximum item burden, allowing you to carry more items before becoming encumbered. Invaluable for farming runs.
Stone of Ephemeral Eyes (Human Form Restoration)
- Location:
- Boletarian Palace (1-1): One can be found on a corpse near the Tower Knight Archstone.
- Valley of Defilement (5-1, 5-2): Scattered throughout the swamp and often dropped by Depraved Ones.
- Tower of Latria (3-1): Found on corpses in cells.
- Farming Strategy (Late Game): The easiest way to acquire these in bulk is to defeat the Primeval Demon in Pure Black World Tendency in various worlds (e.g., Valley of Defilement 5-2, Stonefang Tunnel 2-1). Each Primeval Demon drops one.
- Significance: Restores your body form, allowing you to summon phantoms and increasing your maximum HP. Use sparingly, as dying in body form shifts World Tendency towards Black.
General Farming Tips
- Increase Item Discovery:
- Equip the Providential Ring (starting gift or found in Shrine of Storms 4-1).
- Wield the Large Sword of Searching (crafted from a Straight Sword +8 and the Hero Demon's Soul).
- Having Pure Black World Tendency can increase enemy drop rates for rare items, but also makes enemies significantly stronger.
- Resetting Enemies: Returning to the Nexus or touching an Archstone will reset all non-boss enemies in that world. This is crucial for repeated farming runs.
- Manage Item Burden: Regularly offload excess items to Stockpile Thomas in the Nexus to avoid becoming encumbered.
- Soul Farming: While not an item, Souls are your primary currency. Combine farming routes for items with efficient Soul acquisition. The Reaper in Shrine of Storms (4-2) is an excellent early-to-mid game Soul farm.
