Valley of Defilement (5-1): Depraved Chasm
Welcome to the Valley of Defilement, a putrid and perilous realm where disease and despair reign supreme. World 5-1, the Depraved Chasm, serves as your grim introduction to this blighted land. Prepare for treacherous navigation, relentless enemies, and the ever-present threat of plague.
Navigating the Depraved Chasm
The Depraved Chasm is characterized by its precarious wooden walkways, murky swamp waters, and a dense population of desperate inhabitants. Your primary challenges here will be environmental hazards and the unique enemy types.
Key Navigation Tips:
- Wooden Walkways: These narrow, rickety platforms are your main pathways. Many sections are broken, requiring careful jumps or detours. Always observe your surroundings for potential drops or hidden paths. Enemies often lie in wait around corners or on ledges above.
- The Swamp: Falling into the swamp below the walkways or venturing into its deeper sections will inflict the Plague status effect. Plague rapidly drains your HP. Keep a supply of Royal Lotus or Full Lotus to cure it, or be prepared to use healing items frequently. Rolling in the swamp is significantly slower, making you vulnerable.
- Light Source: The area is dimly lit. A Light Weapon spell, Talisman of God with Light, or the Augurite item can significantly improve visibility, especially in the swampy sections.
- Enemy Ambushes: Depraved Ones are adept at ambushing. They often hide behind structures, under walkways, or drop from ledges. Always approach new areas cautiously, shield up, and be ready to roll.
Enemies Encountered:
- Depraved One: The most common enemy. These emaciated humanoids wield various crude weapons (clubs, knives, torches). They are relatively weak individually but dangerous in groups. Some carry torches, which can inflict minor fire damage.
- Giant Depraved One: Larger, tougher versions of the Depraved One, often wielding massive clubs. They hit hard and have more HP. Prioritize ranged attacks or bait out their slow swings for counter-attacks.
- Large Depraved One: Similar to Giant Depraved Ones, but often found in more confined spaces or guarding key pathways. They can be particularly dangerous on narrow walkways.
- Flying Gnat: Small, flying insects that appear in swarms, particularly near the swamp. They inflict minimal damage but can be annoying and distract from more dangerous foes. Area-of-effect spells or wide-arc weapon swings are effective.
Notable Items & Loot:
- Stone of Ephemeral Eyes: Often found near challenging enemy groups or off the beaten path. Essential for maintaining Human Form.
- Renowned Warrior's Soul: Provides a significant boost to souls when consumed.
- Crescent Moon Grass: Your primary healing item in this area.
- Royal Lotus: Crucial for curing Plague. Stock up!
- Poison Resistance Ring: Found early in the level, highly recommended for the later parts of the Valley.
- Thief's Ring: (If not already obtained) Can be found near the beginning, useful for stealth.
Boss: Leechmonger
The Leechmonger is the grotesque guardian of the Depraved Chasm, a writhing mass of bloodsucking leeches that have coalesced into a single, monstrous entity. It resides in a circular arena, surrounded by shallow, plague-inducing water.
Boss Weaknesses & Resistances:
- Weakness: Fire (critical), Magic
- Resistance: Bleed, Poison, Plague
- Immunity: Sleep, Stun
Recommended Loadout:
- Weapon: Any weapon enchanted with Light Weapon or Cursed Weapon. Weapons with natural fire damage (e.g., Dragon Long Sword, Lava Bow) are highly effective.
- Spells/Miracles: Flame Toss, Fireball, Ignite, Wrath of God (if you can get close), Firestorm (if you can get close).
- Rings: Fragrant Ring (for mana regen), Cling Ring (essential for HP in Soul Form), Thief's Ring (can help with initial positioning).
- Items: Plenty of Old Spice/Fresh Spice for magic users, Turpentine or Sticky White Stuff for melee weapons, Royal Lotus in case of plague.
Strategy for Leechmonger:
The Leechmonger is a stationary boss, but its attacks have surprising reach and can inflict plague. The key is to exploit its vulnerability to fire and magic from a safe distance, or to quickly burst it down in melee.
- Arena Overview: The arena is a circular pit with a central platform where Leechmonger resides. The surrounding water is shallow but causes plague. There are several pillars around the edge that can offer temporary cover.
- Initial Approach: As you enter, Leechmonger will likely be dormant. You can often get a few free hits or cast some spells before it fully activates.
- Ranged Strategy (Recommended):
- Position yourself on one of the higher ledges around the arena, or on the central platform itself if you feel safe.
- Use Flame Toss, Fireball, or a bow with Fire Arrows. Aim for the central, fleshy core of the Leechmonger for maximum damage.
- Be aware of its "Leech Spray" attack, where it spits out a volley of leeches that can inflict plague. Roll or block to avoid.
- It also has a "Leech Tentacle" attack, where it extends a long tentacle to swipe at you. This has a surprisingly wide arc.
- Maintain distance and continuously pepper it with fire or magic. If you run low on mana, use Old Spice.
- Melee Strategy:
- This is riskier due to the close proximity to plague-inducing water and Leechmonger's melee attacks.
- Apply Turpentine or Sticky White Stuff to your weapon.
- Rush in and target the central core. Get a few hits in, then roll away from its "Leech Tentacle" and "Leech Slam" attacks.
- The "Leech Slam" is a powerful area-of-effect attack where it slams its body down, creating a shockwave.
- Be prepared to cure plague if you spend too much time in the water or get hit by its spray.
- If you have Firestorm, you can potentially one-shot or severely cripple Leechmonger by casting it directly on its core.
- Periodically, Leechmonger will coil up and begin to regenerate. This is your cue to unleash as much damage as possible to interrupt its healing. Fire damage is particularly effective at stopping this.
- Common Pitfalls:
- Plague: Don't underestimate the plague. Always have a cure ready.
- Getting Cornered: The arena, while open, can feel claustrophobic if you're not careful with your movement.
- Ignoring Regeneration: If you let Leechmonger regenerate too much, the fight will drag on and consume more resources.
Rewards for Defeating Leechmonger:
- Bloody Memorial: A significant amount of souls.
- Demon's Soul: Leechmonger's Soul. This can be consumed for souls, or given to Sage Freke to learn the Poison Cloud spell, or to Yuria the Witch to learn the Fireball spell.
With Leechmonger defeated, you have cleared the first hurdle of the Valley of Defilement. Prepare yourself, for the depths only grow darker and more dangerous from here.
