Getting Started
Welcome, brave adventurer, to the treacherous, yet undeniably captivating, world of Boletaria! This comprehensive guide will equip you with the fundamental knowledge and actionable strategies needed to not only survive your initial encounters but to thrive in the face of overwhelming odds. Prepare for a challenging, yet immensely rewarding journey through one of gaming's most influential titles.
Character Creation: Your First Steps into the Fog
Before you even set foot in Boletaria proper, your journey begins with a crucial decision: your character. While Demon's Souls allows for significant build flexibility later on, your starting class and gift can provide a vital early advantage or a unique challenge.
Choosing Your Class
Your starting class determines your initial stats, equipment, and spells/miracles. While any class can eventually be molded into any playstyle, some offer a smoother early game experience, especially for newcomers.
- Knight: A solid choice for beginners. Good starting armor, shield, and a reliable sword. Focuses on Strength and Endurance.
- Temple Knight: Excellent for those who want to dabble in miracles early. Comes with a powerful Halberd and the Heal miracle.
- Royal: The "easy mode" for many. Starts with a Catalyst, Soul Arrow spell, and a Fragrant Ring for passive MP regeneration. Allows for ranged combat from the outset.
- Magician: Similar to Royal but with more offensive spells. A bit more fragile initially.
- Hunter: Starts with a Bow, offering a ranged option. Good for those who prefer Dexterity builds.
- Thief: High Dexterity and starts with a Dagger and Bow. Good for backstabs and stealth, but squishy.
- Barbarian: High Strength and Vitality, but poor starting equipment. For experienced players looking for a challenge.
- Soldier: A balanced melee class, similar to Knight but with different equipment.
- Wanderer: Dexterity-focused with light armor. Agile but vulnerable.
- Priest: Starts with Heal and a Mace. Good for a faith-based melee build.
Recommendation for New Players: The Royal class is highly recommended due to its early access to ranged magic and MP regeneration, making many early encounters significantly more manageable. The Knight and Temple Knight are also excellent choices for a more traditional melee approach.
Selecting Your Starting Gift
Your starting gift offers a small bonus that can be helpful in the early game. None are game-breaking, but some are more universally useful.
- Providential Ring: Increases item discovery. Useful for farming, but not essential early on.
- Fragrant Ring: Slowly regenerates MP. Invaluable for magic users, and a decent choice for any class to use later. (Royal starts with this!)
- Talisman of God: Allows casting of miracles. Only useful if you plan to use miracles immediately and didn't start as a Temple Knight or Priest.
- Large Sword of Moonlight: A powerful unique weapon, but requires high Faith to wield effectively. Not for early game use for most.
- Ring of Herculean Strength: Increases equip load. Useful for carrying more items or wearing heavier armor without being encumbered.
- Soul of a Lost Undead: Grants 200 souls. A very minor boost.
- Firebomb: 5 throwable explosives. Can be useful for specific early enemies.
- Augite of Guidance: 10 glowing stones to mark your path. Mostly cosmetic.
- New Moon Grass: 5 healing items. Minor.
Recommendation: The Fragrant Ring is often the most practical choice, especially if you didn't start as a Royal. Otherwise, the Ring of Herculean Strength can offer some early quality-of-life improvement.
The Nexus: Your Sanctuary and Hub
After a brief, often fatal, encounter in the tutorial, you will awaken in the Nexus. This ethereal realm serves as your central hub throughout your journey. Here, you will level up, store items, repair equipment, and access the various Archstones leading to Boletaria's distinct regions.
Key NPCs in the Nexus
- The Maiden in Black: The most important NPC. She allows you to level up using souls you've collected. Speak to her frequently!
- Monumental: Sits atop the central staircase. Provides lore and guidance.
- Stockpile Thomas: Located near the Archstones. He stores your excess items, which is crucial as your inventory has weight limits. He also gives you the Ring of Herculean Strength if you speak to him after depositing an item.
- Blacksmith Boldwin: Found near Stockpile Thomas. He repairs your equipment and can upgrade basic weapons.
- Patches, the Hyena: A recurring character who appears later. A merchant with unique items, but always with a trick up his sleeve.
- Sage Freke, the Visionary: Rescued from Boletarian Palace (1-3). Teaches advanced spells.
- Saint Urbain: Rescued from Shrine of Storms (4-2). Teaches advanced miracles.
Nexus Activities
- Leveling Up: Speak to the Maiden in Black. Invest souls into stats that complement your chosen playstyle. Vitality (HP), Endurance (Stamina/Equip Load), Strength/Dexterity (Melee damage), Magic/Faith (Spell/Miracle damage), and Intelligence (MP/Spell Slots) are key.
- Storing Items: Talk to Stockpile Thomas. Get into the habit of storing items you don't immediately need to manage your equip load.
- Repairing Equipment: Visit Blacksmith Boldwin. Equipment durability degrades with use; repair it regularly to avoid penalties.
- Accessing Worlds: Interact with the Archstones. Each Archstone leads to a different region of Boletaria, each with its own challenges and bosses.
Boletarian Palace (1-1): The First Archstone
Your true adventure begins by stepping through the first Archstone, leading to the Boletarian Palace. This area serves as a brutal tutorial, introducing you to Demon's Souls' core combat mechanics, enemy types, and environmental hazards.
Initial Steps and Exploration
- The Gates of Boletaria: Upon entering, you'll find yourself on a bridge. Proceed forward, dispatching the basic Undead Soldiers. Pay attention to their attack patterns.
- First Fog Gate: Beyond the bridge, you'll encounter your first Fog Gate. These signify important areas or boss encounters.
- Enemy Encounters:
- Undead Soldier: Basic melee enemies. Can be parried and riposted.
- Undead Archer: Stationed on ledges. Prioritize them to avoid ranged harassment.
- Dreglings: Weak, often found in groups.
- Blue-Eyed Knight: Tougher, armored foes. Block their attacks, then counter. They drop valuable Hardstone Shards.
- Looting: Always check corners, breakable objects (barrels, crates), and enemy corpses for items. Look for glowing objects on the ground.
- Healing: Use Grass items (Crescent, Late Moon, Full Moon, etc.) to restore HP. They are your primary healing source.
Key Items and Locations in 1-1
- Healing Grass: Dropped by most enemies. Collect as much as possible.
- Souls: Dropped by enemies. Used for leveling and purchasing items.
- Hardstone Shards: Dropped by Blue-Eyed Knights. Used for weapon upgrades.
- Wooden Catalyst: Found early on, allows casting of basic spells.
- Ring of the Evil Eye: Found in the tower where Ostrava is first encountered. Regenerates HP upon killing enemies. Very useful!
- Cling Ring: Found on a corpse near the first shortcut. Crucial item! It reduces the HP penalty in Soul Form (more on this later).
- Binoculars: Found on a corpse near the first shortcut. Useful for scouting.
NPC Encounters
- Ostrava of Boletaria: You'll encounter him trapped on a ledge. Clear the enemies around him, then speak to him. He'll give you a Talisman of God and move to the next area. Rescuing him is important for his questline and unique items.
Strategies for 1-1
- Shield Up: Your shield is your best friend. Block incoming attacks and look for openings to counter.
- Parry and Riposte: Practice parrying (L2 with a shield) to stun enemies, then follow up with a critical riposte (R1). This is highly effective against many humanoids.
- Backstabs: Maneuver behind enemies and press R1 for a powerful critical hit.
- Environmental Awareness: Watch out for ambushes, falling objects, and narrow ledges.
- Don't Rush: Take your time, pull enemies one by one, and learn their attack patterns.
- Soul Form vs. Body Form: When you die, you enter Soul Form, which halves your maximum HP (unless you have the Cling Ring). Dying in Body Form in a world lowers that world's World Tendency towards Black.
- Find Shortcuts: Demon's Souls is designed with shortcuts. Always be on the lookout for gates or levers that open paths back to the Archstone or previous checkpoints. In 1-1, there's a crucial shortcut back to the starting Archstone after the first Blue-Eyed Knight.
Boss: Phalanx
The Phalanx is the first boss of Demon's Souls, serving as a test of your understanding of basic combat mechanics.
Phalanx Strategy
- Weakness: Fire.
- Recommended Items: Firebombs (if you chose them as a starting gift or found them), Turpentine (found in 1-1, applies fire damage to your weapon).
- Phase 1: The Phalanx is a large blob covered in smaller Hoplites (spear-wielding slimes). These Hoplites are its primary defense.
- Approach:
- Melee: If you're a melee character, use Firebombs or a weapon coated with Turpentine to quickly dispatch the Hoplites. Once a section of the Phalanx is exposed, attack it directly. Retreat when the Hoplites reform.
- Magic: If you're a magic user (Royal/Magician), use Soul Arrow to pick off Hoplites from a distance, then target the exposed Phalanx.
- Watch Out For: The Hoplites can extend their spears, and the Phalanx itself can slowly move towards you. Keep your distance and manage your stamina.
- Reward: Upon defeat, you'll receive the Lead Demon's Soul and a significant amount of souls. You can now return to the Nexus and speak to the Monumental to unlock the other Archstones.
With the Phalanx defeated, you have taken your first major step into the world of Demon's Souls. Remember to return to the Nexus, level up, repair your gear, and prepare for the challenges that await in the other Archstones. Good luck, Slayer of Demons!
