Demon's Souls Terminology & Glossary
Demon's Souls, like many complex RPGs, utilizes a unique set of terms and concepts that are essential for understanding its mechanics and lore. Familiarizing yourself with this terminology will greatly enhance your gameplay experience and help you navigate discussions with other players. From the fundamental 'Souls' to the intricate 'World Tendency,' each term plays a vital role in the game's challenging world.
Souls: The primary currency and experience points in Demon's Souls. They are dropped by enemies and used for leveling up your character, purchasing items, and upgrading weapons. Losing all your souls upon death is a core mechanic, adding significant risk to exploration.
World Tendency: A complex system that affects the difficulty, enemy placement, item drops, and even the appearance of certain areas within each of the game's worlds. It can be shifted towards 'White' or 'Black' through player actions like dying, defeating bosses, or killing specific NPCs. Pure White and Pure Black Tendency often unlock unique events and items.
Nexus: The central hub area where players return after death or upon completing a world. It serves as a safe haven and a place to manage inventory, level up, and select which world to venture into next.
Demon Souls: Unique souls obtained from defeating powerful demons (bosses). These are used to craft powerful boss weapons or to learn unique spells and miracles from specific NPCs.
Black Phantom: A powerful, often more aggressive version of an enemy that appears under certain World Tendency conditions or when a player is invaded. They often drop better loot.
