Learning Spells & Miracles
Demon's Souls offers two distinct schools of magic: Sorcery (Spells) and Faith-based abilities (Miracles). Mastering these arts requires finding the right mentors and understanding how to acquire and equip them. Both systems add significant depth to character builds, allowing for powerful offensive and supportive capabilities.
Spells are learned from Sorcerers, while Miracles are taught by Priests. Each requires a specific catalyst to cast and is often enhanced by investing points into Intelligence (for Spells) or Faith (for Miracles). Learning these abilities is crucial for overcoming the game's many challenges.
Learning Spells
Spells are primarily learned from two key NPCs: Sage Freke and Yuria, the Witch. Both can be found in the Prison of Hope (World 3-1) and, once rescued, will relocate to the Nexus. They offer several offensive and utility spells.
- Sage Freke: Rescued from a cell in the Prison of Hope. He teaches a wide array of offensive spells, including Soul Arrow, Soul Ray, and Fireball.
- Yuria, the Witch: Also found in the Prison of Hope. She offers more advanced and specialized spells, such as Homing Soul Arrow and Warding.
To learn spells, you must first find the corresponding Spell Scrolls or tomes. Once learned, they can be equipped at a Catalyst. The effectiveness of spells is directly tied to your Intelligence stat.
Learning Miracles
Miracles are learned from Saint Urbain and his followers. Saint Urbain is initially found in the Prison of Hope (World 3-1) and, like the sorcerers, will move to the Nexus after being rescued.
- Saint Urbain: The primary source for learning Miracles. He teaches a range of divine abilities, from healing spells to powerful offensive miracles like God's Wrath.
- Followers of Saint Urbain: These NPCs can also teach you certain Miracles.
Miracles require a Talisman of God to cast and are enhanced by investing points into your Faith stat. Learning the right Miracles can provide crucial healing and support, or devastating divine retribution.
Equipping Spells and Miracles
Once learned, spells and miracles must be equipped to be used. This is done at a Catalyst (for spells) or a Talisman of God (for miracles) in your inventory. You have a limited number of spell/miracle slots, so choose wisely based on your current needs and build.
| Magic Type | Catalyst/Talisman | Primary Stat | Key NPCs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spells | Catalyst (e.g., Wooden Catalyst, Insanity Catalyst) | Intelligence | Sage Freke, Yuria the Witch |
| Miracles | Talisman of God (e.g., Talisman of God, Talisman of Beasts) | Faith | Saint Urbain |
By strategically learning and equipping spells and miracles, You can significantly enhance their combat effectiveness and survivability, tailoring their character to overcome any obstacle.
