Summoning & Being Summoned: Mechanics and Tips
The ability to summon other players or be summoned into their worlds is a cornerstone of Demon's Souls' multiplayer experience, offering aid against formidable foes or a chance to test your mettle against challenging bosses. To summon a player, you must first be in Soul Form and have a Blue Eye Stone. The summoned player will then appear as a white phantom. The host player must have a sufficient number of boss souls remaining in their inventory to summon, as the game checks this before allowing a summon. The maximum number of players that can be in a world at once is typically three: the host and two summoned phantoms.
Conversely, if you wish to offer your assistance, you will need to be in Body Form and possess a Gold Eye Stone. Placing your s down allows other players in their Soul Form to summon you. The level and Soul Level of both players must be within a certain range for summoning to be possible. This range is generally wider for players who have defeated more bosses, allowing for more flexibility in finding partners. If you are struggling with a particularly difficult boss, such as the Dragon God, summoning a skilled player can make the difference between success and repeated failure. They can draw aggro, deal significant damage, or provide crucial support.
When a player is summoned, they enter the host's world as a white phantom and retain their current equipment and stats. They will have a limited number of healing items, typically Marksman's Ring and a few Green Blossoms. The summoned player's primary objective is to help the host overcome the challenges of their current world, which often culminates in defeating the area's boss. If the host dies, the summoned player is returned to their own world. If the host successfully defeats the boss, the summoned player is also returned, often with a reward of souls.
It's important to remember that summoned players are vulnerable to invasions from Black Phantoms if the host is in Body Form. This adds an extra layer of risk and excitement to the cooperative experience. If you are the host and have summoned help, be mindful of your surroundings and the potential for invaders. Conversely, if you are the summoned player, be prepared for the possibility of PvP encounters. A common courtesy when being summoned is to wait for the host to initiate combat or to follow their lead, especially if they are clearly strategizing or navigating a dangerous section of the level. Effective communication, even through gestures, can greatly improve the cooperative experience.
