Armor Spider Archstone (2-2): Stonefang Tunnel's Depths
Welcome, Slayer of Demons, to the treacherous depths of Stonefang Tunnel, accessible via the Armor Spider Archstone (2-2). This lava-filled labyrinth is a prime source of valuable upgrade materials and presents one of Boletaria's most challenging early-game bosses, the Flame Lurker. Prepare for intense combat against fire-resistant foes and navigate perilous environments. This guide will meticulously detail every step, item, and enemy encounter to ensure your success.
Navigating the Fiery Caverns
Upon activating the Armor Spider Archstone, you'll find yourself in a relatively safe chamber. Ahead lies a long tunnel leading into the heart of the volcanic mine. Be prepared for the following encounters:
- Initial Descent: As you proceed down the main tunnel, you'll immediately encounter several Scale Miners. These enemies are relatively slow but hit hard. Their attacks are easily parried or dodged.
- First Lava Pit: The tunnel opens into a larger cavern with a central lava pit. On the far side, a Fat Official patrols. This enemy is a significant threat with its fire-based magic and heavy cleaver. Lure it back into the tunnel for a safer fight, or use ranged attacks to chip away at its health.
- Bearbug Infestation (Left Path): To the left of the Fat Official, a narrow path leads down. This area is heavily populated by Bearbugs.
Dealing with Bearbugs
Bearbugs are unique and dangerous enemies. They come in two varieties:
- Small Bearbugs: These are numerous and explode upon death, dealing fire damage. They are weak to blunt damage. Use a sweeping weapon or magic to dispatch groups from a safe distance.
- Large Bearbugs: These are much tougher, have more health, and also explode upon death. They can also charge and ram you. Their explosions are significantly more damaging. Target their glowing weak point (often their underside) for increased damage. Blunt weapons are highly effective. Always maintain distance after landing the killing blow to avoid the explosion.
Important Item Locations (Early Caverns)
- Left Path (Bearbug Area):
- Hardstone Shards/Chunks: Numerous small and large Bearbugs drop these.
- Sharpstone Shards/Chunks: Found on corpses scattered throughout this path.
- Dragonstone Shard: Often found near the end of the Bearbug-infested path, before reaching the lower levels.
- Right Path (Tunnel to Elevator):
- Clearstone Shard: Located on a corpse in a small alcove to the right, just before the first elevator.
- Full Moon Grass: Found on various corpses.
The Lower Levels and Flame Lurker's Lair
After clearing the initial caverns, you'll find an elevator leading down. This elevator takes you to the lower mining levels, which are even more dangerous.
- Second Fat Official: As you exit the elevator, another Fat Official awaits. This one is often accompanied by a few Scale Miners. Prioritize the Official due to its ranged attacks.
- Crystal Lizard Spawns: Keep an eye out for Crystal Lizards in this area. They often appear near the lava flows or in small side tunnels. They drop rare upgrade materials like Dragonstone and Greystone.
- Patrolling Miners: The lower levels are patrolled by more Scale Miners and occasionally a Large Scale Miner, which wields a massive pickaxe and hits extremely hard. Dodge their slow attacks and counter.
- Scaffolding Area: You'll eventually reach an area with wooden scaffolding over lava. This is a precarious section. Be careful of falling. More Scale Miners and Bearbugs are present here.
- Black Phantom Fat Official (Pure Black World Tendency): If your World Tendency is Pure Black, a formidable Black Phantom Fat Official will appear in the lower levels, often near the boss fog gate. This enemy is incredibly tough, deals massive damage, and drops the Foe's Ring upon defeat.
Key Item Pickups (Lower Levels)
- Spiderstone Shards/Chunks: Dropped by the Scale Miners in this area.
- Greystone Shards/Chunks: Often found on corpses or dropped by Crystal Lizards.
- Dragonstone Shards/Chunks: Dropped by Crystal Lizards or found on specific corpses near lava.
- Master's Ring: Found on a corpse in a hidden alcove near the end of the scaffolding area, requiring a careful drop.
- Stone of Ephemeral Eyes: Several can be found on corpses throughout the lower levels.

Boss Battle: Flame Lurker
The Flame Lurker is a relentless, fire-infused demon that guards the path to the Dragon God. This boss is highly aggressive and resistant to fire, making careful preparation crucial.
Flame Lurker's Attack Patterns
The Flame Lurker has several devastating attacks:
- Three-Hit Combo: A rapid sequence of claw swipes. Easily dodged by rolling backwards or to the side.
- Leaping Slam: The Lurker leaps into the air and slams down, creating a small AoE fire explosion. Roll towards it as it lands to get behind it.
- Ground Pound (Fire Nova): The boss pounds the ground, creating a larger fire explosion. This attack has a slight wind-up, giving you time to roll away.
- Fire Breath: Occasionally, it will breathe a stream of fire directly in front of it. This is a good opening to attack its sides or rear.
- Enraged Mode: As its health drops, the Flame Lurker will become "enraged," glowing brighter and moving even faster. Its attacks will also deal more damage.
Recommended Strategy
The Flame Lurker's primary weakness is its vulnerability to magic and blunt damage. Fire resistance is also highly beneficial.
Preparation:
- Armor: Equip armor with high fire resistance, such as the Fluted Set or Brushwood Set. The Ring of Flame Resistance is also highly recommended.
- Weapons:
- Melee: Blunt weapons (Mace, Great Club, Morning Star) are incredibly effective. Upgrade them as much as possible. Consider applying Pine Resin or Sticky White Stuff for additional damage, though its effectiveness is moderate.
- Magic: Spells like Soul Arrow, Soul Ray, or Homing Soul Arrow are devastating. Equip the Wooden Catalyst or Silver Catalyst.
- Faith: Miracles like God's Wrath can be effective if you have high Faith, but melee or magic is generally more reliable.
- Shield: A shield with high fire reduction (e.g., Purple Flame Shield +5) can help block some attacks, but dodging is generally safer.
- Consumables: Bring plenty of Full Moon Grass and Old Spice/Fresh Spice for magic users.
Combat Tactics:
- Stay Close, But Not Too Close: The Flame Lurker's attacks are primarily frontal. Staying close allows you to bait its melee combos and then roll behind it for counter-attacks.
- Dodge, Don't Block (Mostly): While a good shield can mitigate some damage, the Flame Lurker's attacks often have high stamina drain and can break your guard. Prioritize dodging its attacks, especially the leaping slam and ground pound. Roll into or through its attacks to end up behind it.
- Target the Back/Sides: After dodging an attack, quickly get to its back or sides and unleash 1-2 hits before preparing to dodge again. Do not get greedy.
- Magic Users: Maintain mid-range distance. Cast your most powerful spells after the boss completes an attack animation. Be ready to roll away from its charges or leaps. Homing Soul Arrow is particularly effective as it tracks the fast-moving boss.
- Stamina Management: This fight is a marathon, not a sprint. Conserve your stamina for dodging and attacking. Do not let your stamina bar deplete entirely.
- Environmental Awareness: The arena is relatively open, but try to avoid getting cornered against the walls.
- Enraged Phase: When the Flame Lurker enrages, its speed and damage increase dramatically. Be even more cautious with your dodges and attacks. This is often a good time for magic users to unleash their strongest spells.
Rewards for Victory
Upon defeating the Flame Lurker, you will receive:
- Flame Lurker's Soul: This unique Demon's Soul can be consumed for 18,000 souls or used to forge powerful weapons at Blacksmith Ed.
- Access to Blacksmith Ed: Defeating the Flame Lurker is a prerequisite for Blacksmith Ed to upgrade weapons using unique Demon's Souls. He is located in the Nexus, but you must first give him the Searing Demon Soul (obtained from the Flamelurker) to unlock his full potential.
With the Flame Lurker vanquished, you have cleared the path to the Dragon God and unlocked crucial weapon upgrade capabilities. Proceed to the next archstone, or return to the Nexus to prepare for your next challenge!
