Cover Usage & Flanking
The 2026 Expansion emphasizes tactical combat, making effective use of cover and flanking maneuvers more critical than ever. Enemies, particularly the new Fallen Syndicate units and the aggressive Hive Broodmothers, are designed to push aggressively and utilize suppressive fire, making static defense a risky proposition. Guardians are encouraged to use the environment to their advantage, ducking behind solid objects like the crumbling pillars in the new Lost Sector, the 'Cinderfall Ruins', or the rocky outcrops on the planetoid of Xylos. The cover system is designed to absorb a significant amount of incoming damage, with destructible elements providing temporary respite. For instance, a well-placed grenade from an enemy Captain can shatter a thin crate, forcing a Guardian to relocate. Understanding which cover is robust and which is fragile is a key survival skill. Flanking, the act of moving around enemy positions to attack from an unexpected angle, is equally vital. Enemies in the expansion often have predictable patrol paths and defensive formations. Identifying these patterns allows Guardians to slip past their front lines and strike from the flanks, disrupting their formations and creating openings for their fireteam. For example, the new 'Void Lurkers' often form a defensive perimeter around their objectives; a Hunter using their dodge to circle around and attack from behind can quickly break this formation, allowing the rest of the team to advance. This is especially important when facing enemies with high frontal defenses, such as the heavily armored Cabal Praetorians, whose weak points are often exposed on their rear.
The expansion introduces new mechanics that reward strategic cover usage and flanking. Certain Exotic weapons, like the 'Shadowfang Pulse Rifle', gain a damage bonus of 15% against enemies not currently targeting the user, incentivizing flanking. Similarly, subclass abilities can be used to facilitate these tactics. The Warlock's Voidwalker ability, 'Nova Warp', can be used to quickly close the distance on flanking targets, while the Titan's 'Barricade' can provide temporary cover for allies attempting to reposition. Enemies are also more adept at flanking Guardians. Be aware of enemy patrols that attempt to outmaneuver your position, especially in open areas. The 'Scorn Ravagers', for instance, are known for their aggressive flanking tactics, often using their Blink ability to appear behind unsuspecting Guardians. Effective communication within a fireteam is paramount for coordinating flanking maneuvers and calling out enemy positions. A well-timed flank can turn the tide of a difficult encounter, such as the boss fight against the 'Chronos Warden', where exposing its temporal core requires coordinated assaults from multiple angles. Mastering these tactical elements will significantly improve your survivability and effectiveness in the challenging new content.
