Dive into the core gameplay mechanics and systems that define the Destiny 2 experience. From combat and abilities to gear progression and economy, understanding these fundamental elements is key to becoming a proficient Guardian. This section provides a comprehensive overview of what makes Destiny 2 tick.

Combat & Abilities

Combat is fast-paced and ability-driven. Guardians wield a combination of:

  • Firearms: A vast arsenal of kinetic, energy, and power weapons with unique archetypes and perks.
  • Grenades: Elemental projectiles with various effects (damage, suppression, blinding).
  • Melee Abilities: Powerful close-range attacks unique to each class.
  • Class Abilities: Utility skills like Titan's Barricade, Hunter's Dodge, and Warlock's Rift.
  • Super Abilities: Devastating ultimate powers that charge over time or through combat.

Mastering ability cooldowns, weapon switching, and enemy targeting is crucial for success.

Gear & Progression

Your Guardian's power is primarily determined by their Gear Score (Light Level) and the quality of their equipment.

  • Weapons & Armor: Acquired through activities, vendors, and drops. They have different rarities (Common, Uncommon, Rare, Legendary, Exotic).
  • Light Level: The combined power level of your equipped gear. Higher Light Level allows you to tackle more challenging activities.
  • Exotics: Unique weapons and armor pieces with powerful, often build-defining perks.
  • Masterworking: Upgrading Legendary and Exotic gear to its highest potential, granting stat bonuses and generating Orbs of Power on kills.

Subclass Customization

Each of the three classes (Titan, Hunter, Warlock) has access to multiple elemental subclasses (Solar, Arc, Void, Stasis, Strand). These subclasses determine your grenade, melee, and Super abilities, and can be further customized with Aspects and Fragments, allowing for deep buildcrafting.

The Mod System

Armor pieces have mod slots that can be filled with mods to enhance stats, improve ability regeneration, grant damage resistance, or provide other beneficial effects. This system is central to optimizing your Guardian's performance for specific activities.

Economy & Resources

Destiny 2 features a robust economy with various currencies and materials:

  • Glimmer: The primary currency, used for purchasing items, upgrades, and mods.
  • Legendary Shards: A key currency for acquiring Legendary gear and materials from vendors.
  • Enhancement Cores & Prisms: Used for Masterworking armor and upgrading Exotic armor.
  • Ascendant Alloys: A rare material needed for Masterworking Exotic armor.
  • Infusion: Using higher-Light Level gear to increase the Light Level of your favorite pieces.

Activities & Content Types

The game offers a wide variety of activities:

  • PvE (Player vs. Environment): Strikes, Story Missions, Dungeons, Raids, Seasonal Activities, Patrols.
  • PvP (Player vs. Player): Crucible (various modes), Gambit (PvEvP).
  • Seasonal Content: Time-limited activities and storylines that rotate each season.

The Guardian's Journey

New players start with the "New Light" experience, which introduces core mechanics. The journey involves completing story campaigns, engaging in endgame activities like Raids and Grandmaster Nightfalls, and continuously improving your Guardian's power and build.
