Destinations & Patrols
Destinations are the diverse worlds and locations within Destiny 2 where Guardians undertake missions, engage in combat, and explore the vast universe. Patrols are the open-world activities found within these destinations, offering dynamic events and challenges that reward players with experience, gear, and resources.
Destinations are the lifeblood of Destiny 2's PvE content, offering several environments from the lush forests of the EDZ to the desolate wastes of the Tangled Shore. Each destination features unique enemy factions, public events, Lost Sectors, and patrols that provide ongoing engagement for Guardians. Patrols themselves are short, repeatable activities that appear on your destination map, encouraging exploration and providing a steady stream of rewards. These can range from defeating specific enemy types to collecting resources or defending key locations.
Types of Destinations:
- Planetary Destinations: These are the core open-world areas like the Cosmodrome, EDZ, Nessus, Io, Titan, Mercury, Mars, and the Dreaming City. Each has its own unique aesthetic, enemy types, and activities.
- Seasonal Destinations: With each new season, Bungie often introduces new, temporary destinations or expands upon existing ones with new areas and activities.
- Raid and Dungeon Hubs: While not fully explorable in a patrol capacity, locations like the Derelict Leviathan or the Vex Network serve as unique hubs for specific endgame activities.
Patrol Activities:
Once you arrive in a destination, you'll find several Patrol activities available. These are marked on your in-game map and often involve:
- Public Events: These are dynamic, multi-stage events that can be joined by any Guardian in the vicinity. They range from defending a location against waves of enemies to escorting a payload. Completing them, especially with a heroic activation, yields significant rewards.
- Lost Sectors: These are hidden, mini-dungeons within each destination. They typically involve clearing out a group of enemies to reach a boss, who drops a chest with rewards. Lost Sectors are crucial for acquiring Exotic armor pieces, as one specific Lost Sector on each destination rotates daily to drop a random Exotic.
- Bounties: Vendors in each destination, as well as the Tower and the H.E.L.M., offer daily and weekly bounties. These are small quests that task you with defeating specific enemy types, completing certain activities, or using particular weapons.
- Patrols (Standard): These are simple, often quick tasks like collecting items, defeating a set number of enemies, or activating a beacon. They provide a small amount of experience and Glimmer.
- Adventures: These are more involved, story-driven missions that offer a deeper dive into the lore of a specific destination or faction.
Why Engage with Destinations and Patrols?
Patrolling destinations is essential for several reasons:
- Resource Acquisition: You'll gather Glimmer, Legendary Shards, Enhancement Cores, and destination-specific materials needed for crafting, upgrading gear, and purchasing items from vendors.
- Gear Progression: Public Events, Lost Sectors, and vendor engrams are excellent sources of gear, helping you increase your Power Level and find new weapons and armor.
- Triumphs and Collections: Many Triumphs and Collection entries are tied to activities within specific destinations, encouraging exploration and completion.
- Exotic Farming: Daily Legend Lost Sectors are a primary method for farming specific Exotic armor pieces.
- Lore and World Building: Exploring destinations and completing their associated activities provides a rich understanding of Destiny 2's lore and the ongoing narrative.
Tips for Efficient Patrolling:
- Always pick up available bounties before heading out.
- Prioritize Heroic Public Events for better rewards.
- Check the daily Legend Lost Sector for potential Exotic armor drops.
- Use your Ghost's perks to track nearby resources and chests.
- Coordinate with other Guardians during Public Events for faster completion.
