Basic Combat & Mechanics

Disgaea 6 introduces several quality-of-life features and mechanics that streamline the grind while retaining the series' strategic depth. Understanding these core systems is crucial for efficiently progressing through the Netherworlds and powering up your squad of chaotic heroes.

The Combat Grid: Movement & Positioning

Battles in Disgaea 6 take place on a tactical grid. Each character has a specific movement range (MOV) and attack range, indicated by colored tiles when selected. Proper positioning is paramount for several reasons:

  • Attack Range: Ensure your units are within range of enemies to deal damage. Melee units need to be adjacent, while ranged units and spellcasters have varying attack patterns.
  • Geo Panels: These colored tiles on the battlefield apply various effects (e.g., ATK +50%, DEF -20%, No Entry). Strategically using or destroying Geo Symbols (the pyramids that generate these effects) can turn the tide of battle.
  • Team Attacks: When multiple allied units are adjacent to an enemy, they have a chance to perform a Team Attack, dealing bonus damage. Positioning units around a strong foe can significantly increase your damage output.
  • Throwing: Units can pick up and throw other units (allies or enemies) to extend movement, reach distant areas, or even throw enemies into dangerous Geo Panels. This is a vital mechanic for puzzle-like maps and efficient enemy clearing.

Action Economy: Turns & Actions

Combat is turn-based. During your turn, you can select each deployed unit and issue commands. Commands include:

  • Move: Relocate your unit within its MOV range.
  • Attack: Use a basic attack or a special skill.
  • Lift/Throw: Pick up or throw a unit.
  • Defend: Reduce incoming damage until the unit's next turn.
  • Wait: End the unit's turn without performing any other action.

Once all units have acted, or you select "End Turn" from the base panel, the enemy turn begins. Understanding the order of actions and planning several steps ahead is key to mastering Disgaea's combat.

Special Skills & Mana

Each character possesses a unique set of Special Skills, ranging from powerful attacks to healing spells and status effects. These skills consume Mana (SP), which regenerates slightly each turn or can be restored through items. As characters use skills, those skills gain experience and level up, increasing their power and efficiency.

  • Skill Mastery: Repeatedly using a skill will increase its level, boosting its damage, healing, or effect duration.
  • Evilities: These are passive abilities that provide various benefits, such as stat boosts, unique combat effects, or utility. Characters learn Evilities as they level up or through the Skill Shop. Equipping the right Evilities for a given situation can drastically alter a unit's effectiveness.

The Base Panel & Deployment

At the start of most battles, your units will be confined to a "Base Panel." You can deploy a limited number of units from this panel each turn. The Base Panel also serves as a safe zone; units inside cannot be attacked. However, if the Base Panel is destroyed by an enemy, you lose the ability to deploy more units, and any units still inside are defeated.

  • Strategic Deployment: Consider the map layout and enemy positions when deploying. Don't clump all your units together if there's a powerful area-of-effect enemy.
  • Recalling Units: You can recall units back to the Base Panel, though this consumes their turn. This can be useful for healing or protecting a low-HP character.

Auto-Battle & Demonic Intelligence (DI)

Disgaea 6 introduces robust Auto-Battle and Demonic Intelligence (DI) systems. While some purists might initially balk, these features are designed to alleviate the grind and allow players to focus on strategic planning and character building rather than repetitive actions.

  • Auto-Battle: Once activated, your units will automatically execute actions based on their AI settings. This is incredibly useful for farming Item World, experience, or HL.
  • Demonic Intelligence (DI): This is the core of the auto-battle system. You can customize the behavior of individual units or entire classes through the "DI Editor" in the Dark Assembly.
  • DI Editor Strategies:
    1. Prioritize Targets: Set conditions like "Attack enemy with lowest HP" or "Attack enemy with highest ATK."
    2. Skill Usage: Define when units should use specific skills, e.g., "Use Mega Heal when ally HP is below 50%."
    3. Movement: Instruct units to "Move towards nearest enemy" or "Stay near Base Panel."
    4. Item Usage: Set conditions for using healing items like "Use a healing item when HP is below 30%."

Experiment with DI settings early on. A well-tuned DI can efficiently clear maps, allowing you to focus on the overarching progression and character optimization.
