Party Composition & Roles
Building an effective party in Divinity: Original Sin is crucial for success, especially on higher difficulties. Unlike its sequel, DOS1 features a fixed party size of four characters, meaning every slot counts. A well-balanced team can tackle any challenge, while a poorly constructed one will struggle. This section will guide you through creating synergistic parties, focusing on specific roles and actionable strategies.
Understanding Core Party Dynamics
Your party should ideally cover a range of combat and utility needs. Think of your team as a specialized unit, where each member contributes uniquely. While you can respec your characters later at the End of Time, it's best to have a solid plan from the outset.
- Two Main Characters: You start with two custom main characters. These are your primary damage dealers or utility specialists. Consider making one a melee combatant and the other a ranged attacker or spellcaster for early game balance.
- Two Companions: You'll recruit two additional companions to round out your party. These often fill roles your main characters don't, or reinforce existing strengths.
Key Roles and Recommended Builds
Here are the essential roles your party should aim to cover, along with specific build recommendations and early-game strategies:
1. The Tank/Melee Bruiser
This character stands on the front lines, soaking up damage and disrupting enemy formations. They are vital for protecting your squishier backline.
- Attributes: Prioritize Strength for damage and equip requirements, and Constitution for health. A few points in Speed can help with initiative.
- Abilities:
- Weapon Ability: Two-Handed (for maximum damage) or One-Handed & Shield (for maximum defense).
- Combat Abilities:
- Man-at-Arms: Essential for skills like Battering Ram (knockdown), Whirlwind (AoE), and Challenge (taunt). Aim for at least 2-3 points early on.
- Bodybuilding: Increases resistance to status effects.
- Civil Abilities: Consider Leadership for party-wide bonuses or Blacksmithing/Crafting for gear maintenance.
- Talents: Comeback Kid (survivability), Opportunist (free attacks), Picture of Health (more HP).
- Early Game Strategy:
- Gear: Focus on heavy armor. Look for the Plate Leggings and Plate Cuirass sold by merchants in Cyseal. The Shield of the Lion (found in a chest near the lighthouse) is an excellent early-game defensive option.
- Skills: Purchase Battering Ram and Whirlwind skillbooks from Arhu in Cyseal. Use Battering Ram to knock down dangerous enemies and Whirlwind to clear groups of weaker foes.
2. The Ranged Damage Dealer (Archer/Crossbowman)
Positioned safely behind the tank, this character dishes out consistent physical damage and applies debilitating status effects.
- Attributes: Maximize Dexterity for damage and hit chance. Some Perception helps with critical chance and finding traps.
- Abilities:
- Weapon Ability: Bow or Crossbow.
- Combat Abilities:
- Expert Marksman: Crucial for skills like Ricochet (AoE), Rain of Arrows (powerful AoE), and Farseer (accuracy buff). Aim for 3-4 points.
- Scoundrel: A few points can grant access to Fast Track (AP generation) and Walk in Shadows (invisibility for repositioning).
- Civil Abilities: Loremaster (identifying items) or Sneaking (positioning for alpha strikes).
- Talents: Arrow Recovery (resource management), Pinpoint (accuracy), Guerilla (bonus damage from stealth).
- Early Game Strategy:
- Gear: Prioritize bows/crossbows with high damage. The Longbow of the Forest (found in a hidden chest near the Cyseal beach) is a good early pickup. Look for gear that boosts Dexterity or Expert Marksman.
- Skills: Buy Ricochet and Farseer skillbooks from Aureus in Cyseal. Use Ricochet to hit multiple enemies, especially those grouped together.
3. The Elemental Mage (Crowd Control & AoE)
This spellcaster controls the battlefield with elemental effects, creating surfaces, and dealing magical damage. They are excellent for crowd control and area-of-effect damage.
- Attributes: Focus on Intelligence for spell damage and Speed for initiative and AP.
- Abilities:
- Combat Abilities:
- Aerotheurge: For stunning (Stun Grenade, Teleportation) and movement.
- Hydrosophist: For healing (Regenerate), freezing (Hail Attack), and wet status.
- Pyromancer: For burning (Flare, Fireball) and explosive damage.
- Geomancer: For poisoning (Poison Dart), slowing (Slow), and earth shields.
It's often best to specialize in 2-3 schools rather than spreading points too thin. A common powerful combo is Hydrosophist/Aerotheurge for freezing and stunning.
- Civil Abilities: Bartering (better prices) or Lucky Charm (more loot).
- Combat Abilities:
- Talents: Know-It-All (more Intelligence), Elemental Affinity (AP reduction on surfaces), Far Out Man (increased spell range).
- Early Game Strategy:
- Gear: Look for robes and staves that boost Intelligence or spell schools. The Staff of the Apprentice (from a quest reward) is a decent early weapon.
- Skills: Purchase skillbooks from Arhu (Aerotheurge/Pyromancer) and Cylia the Enchantress (Hydrosophist/Geomancer) in Cyseal. Prioritize Rain (Hydrosophist 1) to create wet surfaces, then follow up with Blitz Bolt (Aerotheurge 1) for guaranteed stun. Flare (Pyromancer 1) is a good early damage spell.
4. The Support/Utility Character (Healer, Buffer, Debuffer)
This character focuses on keeping the party alive, buffing allies, and debuffing enemies. They often have high utility outside of combat as well.
- Attributes: Intelligence (for spell effectiveness), Constitution (survivability), and Speed (initiative).
- Abilities:
- Combat Abilities:
- Hydrosophist: Essential for healing spells like Regenerate and Cure Wounds, and defensive buffs like Protective Barrier.
- Witchcraft: For powerful debuffs (Decay, Malediction) and summons (Summon Undead Decapitator).
- Man-at-Arms: A few points can grant access to Encourage (buff) and Cure Wounds (if not using Hydrosophist).
- Civil Abilities: Loremaster (identifying items), Telekinesis (moving heavy objects), or Perception (finding secrets).
- Combat Abilities:
- Talents: All Skilled Up (extra ability points), Pet Pal (talk to animals for quests), Five Star Diner (double food healing).
- Early Game Strategy:
- Gear: Light armor or robes. Look for gear that boosts Intelligence, Hydrosophist, or Witchcraft.
- Skills: Buy Regenerate and Cure Wounds from Cylia the Enchantress. If going for Witchcraft, purchase Summon Undead Decapitator from Thelyron in Cyseal. Use healing spells proactively and debuffs on dangerous enemies.
Example Party Compositions
Here are a few balanced party compositions that work well:
1. Classic Balanced Party
- Main Character 1: Two-Handed Warrior (Tank/Melee DPS)
- Main Character 2: Archer (Ranged Physical DPS)
- Companion 1 (Jahan): Hydrosophist/Aerotheurge Mage (Healer/CC)
- Companion 2 (Madora): Two-Handed Warrior (Melee DPS, can be built as a secondary tank)
- Strategy: Madora focuses purely on damage, while your main warrior draws aggro. Jahan keeps everyone alive and controls the battlefield with elemental spells.
2. Dual Mage Dominance
- Main Character 1: One-Handed & Shield Warrior (Pure Tank)
- Main Character 2: Pyromancer/Geomancer Mage (Fire/Earth AoE DPS)
- Companion 1 (Jahan): Hydrosophist/Aerotheurge Mage (Healer/CC)
- Companion 2 (Wolgraff): Scoundrel Rogue (Backstab DPS/Utility)
- Strategy: The warrior holds the line while your two mages unleash devastating elemental combos. Wolgraff provides burst damage and utility like lockpicking.
3. Physical Powerhouse
- Main Character 1: Two-Handed Warrior (Melee DPS)
- Main Character 2: Archer (Ranged Physical DPS)
- Companion 1 (Madora): Two-Handed Warrior (Melee DPS/Off-Tank)
- Companion 2 (Bairdotr): Archer (Ranged Physical DPS)
- Strategy: This party focuses on overwhelming enemies with physical damage. You'll need to rely on potions and scrolls for healing and magical crowd control, or invest a few points in Hydrosophist on one of your archers for basic healing.
Recruiting Companions
You'll encounter potential companions early in Cyseal. recruit them to fill out your party:
- Madora: A powerful two-handed warrior found in the King Crab Inn in Cyseal. She excels at physical damage.
- Jahan: A versatile mage specializing in Hydrosophist and Aerotheurge, found in the library of the Cyseal Legion Headquarters. He's an excellent healer and crowd controller.
- Bairdotr: A skilled archer found imprisoned in the Cyseal Legion Headquarters. She provides strong ranged physical damage.
- Wolgraff: A rogue with high Scoundrel and Sneaking, found near the Cyseal docks. He's great for burst damage and utility.
