Advanced Environmental Interactions
Divinity: Original Sin's combat system thrives on the creative manipulation of the environment. Beyond simply casting spells, understanding how to combine elemental surfaces, utilize terrain, and exploit interactive objects can turn the tide of battle in your favor. Mastering these advanced interactions is what separates novice adventurers from seasoned Source Hunters.
Elemental Surface Combinations:
The foundation of environmental combat lies in creating and combining elemental surfaces. These surfaces not only deal damage over time but also enable a cascade of powerful reactions.
- Water + Electricity = Electrified Water: Damages and stuns enemies standing in it.
- Water + Poison = Poison Cloud: Deals poison damage over time.
- Fire + Poison = Explosion: Deals sificant area-of-effect fire damage.
- Fire + Air = Smoke Cloud: Obscures vision, making ranged attacks and spells less accurate.
- Oil + Fire = Burning Surface: Deals persistent fire damage.
- Blood + Fire = Burning Surface: Similar to oil, but also heals undead enemies.
Utilizing Terrain and Verticality:
The battlefield is not always flat. Elevated positions offer sificant advantages. Characters on higher ground gain bonuses to their ranged attack accuracy and damage. Conversely, enemies pushed or teleported off ledges can suffer substantial fall damage.
Interactive Objects:
The environment is littered with objects that can be exploited:
- Explosive Barrels: Can be detonated with fire or electricity to deal massive damage.
- Oil Barrels: Can be ited to create burning surfaces.
- Water Barrels: Can be used to create electrified or poisoned water.
- Chains and Levers: Can trigger traps, open doors, or alter the environment.
- Crates and Obstacles: Can be used for cover, blocking line of sight, or as projectiles.
Advanced Tactics:
- Teleportation Chains: Use Teleportation to move enemies into hazardous surfaces, off ledges, or into advantageous positions for your party.
- Rain and Electrify: Cast Rain to create wet surfaces, then follow up with an electrical spell to stun multiple enemies.
- Smoke Screen for Stealth: Use Smoke Cloud to break line of sight and allow for repositioning or initiating stealth attacks.
- Fire and Oil Synergy: Spread oil and then ite it for a devastating area-of-effect attack.
- Leveraging Height: Position archers and mages on high ground for maximum effectiveness.
By creatively combining these elements, you can transform seemingly insurmountable encounters into manageable challenges, showcasing the true depth of Divinity: Original Sin's tactical combat.
