Recommended Sequence of Activities
This section outlines an optimal progression through the initial stages of Divinity: Original Sin, focusing on maximizing experience, acquiring essential gear, and efficiently completing quests in Cyseal and its immediate environs. Following this sequence will help you avoid unnecessarily difficult encounters and ensure you are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
Initial Cyseal Exploration & Quest Acquisition
-
Arrive in Cyseal and Investigate the Murder Scene:
Upon landing on the beach, proceed directly into Cyseal. Your primary objective is to investigate the murder of Councillor Jake. Speak with Captain Aureus at the Cyseal Legion Headquarters to receive the quest "The Murder Mystery."
-
Meet Arhu and Gather Initial Clues:
Locate Arhu, the cat, in the Legion Headquarters. He will provide crucial information regarding the murder. Afterwards, thoroughly examine the murder scene itself, located near the Cyseal North Gate. Interact with all highlighted objects and bodies to gather clues, including the "Bloody Knife" and the "Severed Head."
-
Explore Cyseal Town and Accept Side Quests:
Before venturing outside the city walls, take the time to explore Cyseal. This is vital for picking up numerous side quests that will grant valuable experience and rewards. Prioritize the following:
- Esmeralda's House: Speak with Esmeralda in her house (located near the market) to progress "The Murder Mystery." check her basement for additional clues.
- The King Crab Inn: Visit the inn and speak with the patrons. You'll likely pick up quests like "The Scaredy Cat" (from the cat, Jinx, if you have Pet Pal) and potentially "The Talking Statues."
- Cyseal Market: Engage with the various vendors. This is your chance to sell any initial loot and purchase basic gear, skillbooks, or crafting components. Keep an eye out for merchants who offer quests, such as the fish vendor who might initiate "The Fish Thief."
- The Lighthouse: Head towards the lighthouse in the eastern part of town. Speak with the lighthouse keeper, Alfie, to learn about the undead problem, which ties into later activities.
Early Combat Encounters & Leveling
Once you've gathered initial quests and familiarized yourself with Cyseal, it's time to tackle some easier combat encounters to gain experience and improve your party's capabilities. Focus on areas with lower-level enemies first.
-
The Beach and Lighthouse Road:
Exit Cyseal via the eastern gate towards the lighthouse. You'll encounter a few groups of easy undead enemies. These are excellent for early experience and testing your combat strategies. Be cautious of the Burning Skeleton near the lighthouse itself, as it can be a bit tougher for very low-level parties.
- Strategy: Utilize elemental interactions. Water spells can extinguish burning enemies, and oil surfaces can be ignited for area-of-effect damage.
- Loot: Collect any dropped gear and sell it back in Cyseal.
-
The Cyseal North Gate (Undead Patrols):
Head north from Cyseal. You'll find small patrols of undead. These encounters are generally manageable and provide consistent experience. Avoid venturing too far north initially, as higher-level enemies await.
-
The Black Cove Entrance (Optional Early Exploration):
While the Black Cove itself is a higher-level area, you can safely explore the immediate entrance area to the west of Cyseal. There are usually a few isolated undead or cultists that can be dispatched for minor experience. Do NOT enter the main cave system yet.
Progressing Key Quests
With a few levels under your belt and some basic gear, you can start making significant progress on your main and side quests.
-
Investigate the Mortician's Office:
Return to Cyseal and visit the mortician's office (located near the marketplace). This is a critical step for "The Murder Mystery." You'll find more clues and potentially encounter a suspicious character.
-
The Legion's Undead Problem:
Speak with Captain Aureus again after dealing with the initial undead. He will likely give you the quest "The Legionnaire's Trail" or similar, directing you to clear more significant undead threats outside the city. This often involves heading towards the eastern beach and the lighthouse area in more detail.
-
Completing Early Side Quests:
Focus on completing the simpler side quests you picked up in Cyseal. "The Scaredy Cat" and "The Fish Thief" are good examples of quests that can be resolved within the city or its immediate outskirts, granting easy experience and reputation boosts.
By following this structured approach, you'll build a strong foundation for your adventure in Rivellon, ensuring your party is adequately leveled and equipped to face the greater challenges that lie beyond Cyseal's walls.
