Vision & Warding

Vision is arguably the most crucial resource in Dota 2. Controlling vision through effective warding allows your team to make informed decisions, secure objectives, and avoid ambushes. This guide covers the fundamentals of warding and vision control.

In the fog of war that blankets the Dota 2 map, vision is power. The ability to see where the enemy is, what they are doing, and where they are going dictates your team's ability to farm safely, initiate fights, defend objectives, and ultimately win the game. Mastering vision control through strategic warding is a fundamental skill for all players.

Types of Wards:

  • Observer Wards: These provide true sight in an area for a set duration (typically 6 minutes). They reveal invisible units and buildings. Observer Wards are essential for establishing map control and scouting enemy movements.
  • Sentry Wards: These also provide true sight but have a shorter duration (typically 4 minutes) and are primarily used for detecting and destroying enemy Observer Wards and invisible units. They are crucial for dewarding and ensuring your own vision is not compromised.

Warding Locations:

Strategic ward placement is key. Here are some common and effective locations:

  • River Runes: Placing Observer Wards near the Bounty Runes (top and bottom of the river) provides vision of these crucial early-game resources and potential gank paths.
  • Jungle Entrances: Warding the entrances to your own or the enemy's jungle can provide early warning of rotations or ganks.
  • High Ground: Warding on high ground, especially near objectives like Roshan or enemy towers, gives your team a sificant vision advantage.
  • Secret Shop: Warding the areas around the Secret Shop can help you spot enemies trying to purchase expensive components.
  • Objectives: Before taking Roshan or pushing a tower, warding the surrounding areas is critical for safety and information.

Dewarding:

  • Identify Enemy Wards: Pay attention to areas where the enemy seems to have unusual awareness or where you suspect they have placed wards.
  • Use Sentry Wards: Place Sentry Wards in suspected enemy ward locations to reveal them.
  • Coordinate with Team: Communicate with your team when you suspect enemy wards or when you are dewarding.

Vision Control in Different Game Stages:

  • Early Game: Focus on warding rune spots and jungle entrances to secure lanes and prevent early ganks. Supports are primarily responsible for this.
  • Mid Game: Warding around objectives like Roshan and enemy towers becomes crucial. Teams will contest vision heavily.
  • Late Game: Vision becomes paramount for defending your base and for initiating favorable fights. Aggressive warding deep into enemy territory can reveal their movements and allow for pickoffs.

Who Buys Wards? While traditionally the responsibility of position 4 and 5 supports, all contribute to vision control. Cores can purchase wards if supports are unable to, especially if they have a specific strategic need.

Effective vision control is a team effort. By understanding where and when to place wards, and by actively dewarding, your team can gain a sificant advantage and navigate the map with confidence.
