Understanding Game Modes

Understand Dota 2's unique game modes like All Pick and Ranked All Pick to find your preferred environment for practice or competitive play.

Dota 2 offers various game modes, each with unique rules and hero selection processes. Understanding these modes can help you choose the right environment for practice or competitive play.

Common Game Modes:

  • All Pick (AP): The most popular mode. You can pick any hero, with a short delay between picks. This mode is often used for ranked play.
  • Ranked All Pick: Similar to All Pick, but players compete for MMR (Matchmaking Rating) and a position on the leaderboards.
  • Turbo: A faster-paced version of All Pick with increased gold and experience gain, weaker towers, and faster courier. Ideal for quick games or practicing new heroes.
  • Single Draft (SD): Players are given a choice of three random heroes (one Strength, one Agility, one Intelligence) to pick from. Encourages hero diversity.
  • Random Draft (RD): A pool of 50 random heroes is available for both teams to pick from.
  • Captains Mode (CM): Used in professional matches. Teams take turns banning and picking heroes, with a designated captain making the decisions. Requires strategic drafting.
  • Ability Draft: A fun, custom game mode where players pick individual abilities from a pool of random heroes to create unique hero combinations.
  • Co-op Bots: Play against AI bots with human teammates. Excellent for beginners to learn mechanics.

Experiment with different modes to find what you enjoy most and what best suits your learning goals.
